    RAM DISK software recommendations

Greetings. There are a few posts on the forum concerning RAM disks and I've read them but thought I'd bring it up again. Is anyone running RAM disk software that they love - that isn't causing BSODs or other problems? I just got a new PC (Digital Storm VELOX) with 64GB with the idea of running a RAM disk for some disk-intensive throwaway stuff. I downloaded a trial copy of SoftPerfect's RAM disk software. It looked pretty good until I rebooted and got a BSOD - that's all it took for me to uninstall it. I saw the tutorial for ImDisk and that looks promising. I don't mind spending a few bucks on software if it works and it's reliable.

Any favorites that you can recommend?

    Rob,

I have not used any RAM Disk software extensively yet but here is what I have found:

    1) In my brief testing ImDisk worked well. So far, with my limited research, I think that may be the one I end up using.
    2) For those products that are for purchase, be careful - some of them base the price upon the size of the RAM Disk that you plan to create.

In my case, I just built a system with 128GB RAM specifically with the intent of creating a 100GB RAM Drive to be used as temporary storage for a program that does some very disk intensive operations before creating its final output.

Your bringing up this topic makes me want to pick up my pace of finding a solution, so I think that I'll start researching this further.

If I find anything interesting, I'll post back here.

In the meantime, hopefully some others here can share their experiences as well.

I've experimented with IMDisk and had good luck with it. It's something I never stick with because any performance increase I've found is usually lost when having to shutdown and write what I want from RAM back to my SSD or loading it back into memory when I reattach to it on startup.

Thanks for the replies! Have either of you uninstalled ImDisk from your systems and if so, was the uninstall problem-free? Sometimes device drivers refuse to leave.

Ramdisks are not really that useful these day as Windows 10+ uses compressed memory (fancy cache). For most cases, the over head of copying stuff to/from actual drive to a Ramdrive negates the benefit of direct access. As @OldMainframeGuy says, they are really only useful, if the app writes a lot of temporary data.

What would be really fast is if you had the OS in a bootable virtual drive with the VHD in the Ramdisk. Unfortunately, you cannot do this with normal volatile memory. I remember an article where Windows was installed on a Ramdisk using non volatile memory (memory which retains its contents when rebooted), and his pc went like Sh*t off a proverbial shovel. Unfortunately non volatile memory is very expensive.

I have just had a though though. I wonder if you could created a Ramdisk, copy a bootable vhd to it, then access the vhd from Hyper-V. You would need plenty of Ram to do it.

That's good to know. I just installed it on an older Windows 10 machine; it does what I want and it doesn't cause BSODs! I think this is a keeper.

    Thanks everyone for your input!

I am using AMD Ramdisk (digitally signed), it has been bought by dataram, but they still use the same version from 2016, except they offer only 1GB for free, AMD gives 4GB, but it works nevertheless, even on Win 11.

Download AMD Radeon RAMDisk 4.4.0 RC 36
