You should not compare Unix and especially not Linux with Windows. There history is completely different. And furthermore , Windows has become adult after using all kinds of Intel processor running modes and features. The BIOS of older Intel based computers do still start up in old DOS real mode before they switch to protected mode ( switching is done by the Windows OS , not by the processor as such ). Other OS's were built for total different computer architectures. From the old ones , only Linux has been adapted to run on Intel processors. And from Linux itself , there exist a lot of derivates because every developer can change parts according his own needs.
Summarized : Windows Workstation and Windows Server versions are twins. All other OS's are completely other animals.

There are indeed similarities between Unix and Windows Server , and they were even "stolen" from Unix , but they all appear at the user interface "surface". The deep kernel level is however completely different , and Ramdisks are built and work on top of that kernel , not on top or at the same level of user programs or services.
