Windows 10 taking almost 10 minutes to boot (with SSD)

    Hello Everyone!

My Windows 10 Home (version: 21H1 19043.1110) used to boot from SSD within 30 seconds. Now it takes almost 10 minutes just to get to the login screen. Already tried the following fix with no success:

    - chkdsk
    - sfc /scannow
    - dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    - driver update
    - cold boot with all startup program disable
    - Many trials found on google (battery, performance, msconfig)

I also tried using WPA and WPR to capture boot sequence but lacking the knowledge to analyze it.
I could find that SearchApp.exe <CortanaUI> (5512) was showing really high duration, together with runtimebroker.exe. After capturing some WPR logs, I am not being able to see the logs as before. Maybe I have any filter applied.

Another relevant information is that WPR is showing boots under 300 seconds, when it actually takes almost 600 seconds.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    WPR Log:
    WeTransfer

I'm also updating the Bootlog from other software called ProcessMonitor (I have seen other people analyzing boot sequence with it, but I could also not understand it). I'm sorry if this other log might interfere with the rules of this forum. Just let me know in this case.

    ProcessMonitor Log:
    WeTransfer

    Thanks everyone!

Hi, your laptop seems to be very recent - please advise if you used any methods other than Windows Update prior to the increase in boot time.

You mention a cold boot to lock screen (noted you say login screen - do you not see a lock screen first?) used to take 30s with a SSD. That was very long anyway....

My 7 or 8 yr old Lenovo t440s with SSD, never clean installed since obtained 2nd hand about 4 years ago, takes about 9s.

Only 1 or 2 members here such as @zinou are familiar with the tool- the files are very large, I note.

Meanwhile please feel free to search the forum for threads on

    slow boot
    windows performance analyser

and a combination of those if you've not already done so so gain some ideas.

    Is fast startup disabled?

The original config of this laptop comes with HDD. I had a problem with the HDD and changed it recently to a SSD (5 months maybe).

Fast startup was already enabled, but no changes were observed. With the troubleshooting actions, it is no longer being shown at power management screen.

I could see some posts from other people analyzing WPA/WPR, but it looks very diferent when I try to transport the analyzis to my log.

I'm sorry for not being clear, but it takes almost 30s so that it becomes useable.

The SSD seems to be healthy according to Crystal Disk Info. (91% Good)

    Thanks

    Hi creited,

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

What is the history on this PC?
Did this start to happen very recently or after any hardware or software updates?
Does the slow boot happen each & every time?
Have you tried uninstalling Avast and re-test the boot time?

Chances are, it will be necessary to fully remove Avast and completing this sooner than later will just save time.
It can be re-installed easily once you've restored the expected boot performance time.

Another great and simple method to start troubleshooting a slow boot is to verify the time required to boot to Safe Mode.
This will define the issue as either Windows or a third party app related.

Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

    To check Fast Startup, from an elevated Command Prompt, type or copy and paste the following;

    Code:
    powercfg /a

    Hi,

This is actually my dad's PC. It is dated from 2018 maybe and has never been formated until this year (issue with the original HDD - changed to an SSD and restored the backups - made by a 3rd party specialist). My dad uses it for work and basic internet access. Since he is already an old man, my last option would be a format. More than a backup, he needs all his shortcuts and files to be in the same places as they are now (it would be very difficult for him to get used to new locations at his age).

I cannot guarantee as well that it may not contain virus or malware. But I have already cleaned everything I could with Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, etc.

After changing the HDD to SSD, things got really quick for the boot and usage. Few months later, he started having a delayed windows boot (3-5 minutes) and now I could verify 10 minutes. That's too much for a SSD.

I sent it to a guy here that performs preventive maintenance, and he was able to revert the boot time to something very acceptable (30 seconds to be useable). The guy doesn't know exactally what did he do to solve it, but in 1 day, after a crash, the computer got back to the 10 minute boot.

The guy that tried to help said he did mainly the following:
    changes on MSCONFIG
    sfc /scannow
    virus clean
    firmware update
    fast boot
    (this is what he remembers)

Avast was already removed (actually it was part of the older backup, maybe some trash was still present). Nothing changed after cleaning the install.

    Every boot takes 10 minutes.

I will try to boot in safe mode, to check if something different occurs.

    Hello,

I didn't see a boot delay of 10 min in your boot trace !

maybe the delay occurs during the Bios phase; check the Bios time in the Task manager.

Windows 10 taking almost 10 minutes to boot (with SSD)-image.png

The manner that you did replace the old disk count:
Did you perform a system restore after placing the SDD or did you perform a fresh Windows 10 installation followed by a data restore.

If you have done the first option, I'd suggest you do an in-place upgrade (Search in the forum). I've seen cases similaire cases that a full system restore has been done on a new disk and led to a slow boot. I think this is caused by restoring drivers/config related to the old disk.

    Hi.

I could check that all softwares that records boot for analyzing won't show 10 minutes, but I'm facing > 9 minutes for sure everytime. The behavior is: Windows loading scren with some dots spinning in circle.

The bios phase is showing to be 12.6 seconds according to Task Manager. I really believe that this is windows related.

After replacing, it was a fresh install of Windows (made by a 3rd party guy). What is strange in my case, is that it was working properly (very fast boots) right after this replacement. This slow boot was introduced after my father's usage (which can include windows/drivers updates, viruses or anything else).

Regarding WPR, is there any other setting that I might try to log? I see that there are other options there like "Fast Startup, Reboot Cycle, etc"

It is really strange that these at least 540 seconds are not being shown on these softwares.

Tried to reboot on safe mode. Here are the timestamps:
8:35 minutes from blackscreen until Windows Welcome Screen
    9:58 minutes to load desktop.

Windows 10 Home doesn't seem to work with Windows Boot Performance Diagnostics. I could enable gpedit.msc, but the logs show only shutdown events, and nothing related to booting.

Have already checked for malware infections using some available antimalwares. Some issues seem to be solved but nothing changes the 10 minutes boot.

I am trying with "own hands", but nothing seems to be helping. Anyway, I will keep investigating.

Any help regarding the trace not showing the 10 minute time will also be appreciated.

Type in perfmon /report in the Windows Search box and hit enter. The Performance Manager will automatically run a report and diagnose issues that are impacting your PC. Luckily for you, it will also recommend solutions for each problem found.
