Laptop battery usage

I use my main laptop by having it plugged in all the time is doing this going to damage the battery or does the battery just shut down when fully charged?

It is my understanding that with modern battery and charging technology this is not a problem. FYI I use my the same way.

Thanks for the replies and I shall just run on battery from time to time then just to be on the safe side as the repacement battery for this machine is or would be quite expensive.

My HP Probook has a BIOS option to limit battery charging to 80% to preserve battery life. Check to see if you have a similar setting.

No.

Yes, the charging circuitry stops trying to charge it when the battery is fully charged.

I must have been distracted by something whilst writing my earlier post and left out an interesting link.

Dell Tech Support produced this short video about batteries & charging. Whilst they were addressing Dell customers, Dell never makes any claims about possessing unique battery technology so their statements can be regarded as being fairly generally applicable.

I thought the most interesting facts were:-
- That leaving the computer plugged in after the battery was fully charged has no detrimental effect on battery run-time or overall battery life
- Charging the battery to 100% whenever possible has no detrimental effect on overall battery life
- Charging the battery to 100% even if it has only been partially used [as opposed to always using every drop it has left in it before charging] has no detrimental effect on overall battery life

Hiyya Denis that was really useful and has reinforced what I thought what was the probability with leaving the machine always being plugged in because I very rarely take it out as we are in lockdown anyway and I spend a lot of time at home.
