There are no 3rd-party alternatives. Disk Clean up isn't actually doing the Windows update clean up itself, it launches the TrustedInstaller process to do the actual work. The task you are asking it to do is to clean up the Windows Component Store and remove redundant packages. Only the Windows installer is capable of performing this task. If you look in Task Manager while its cleaning up you'll see TIWorker.exe is running and working hard. And yes, sometimes there can be a lot of work to do.

There are alternative ways to start the process, though - but they won't make it any faster. You can use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) from a Command Prompt (Admin) to start a Windows update clean up. This will just clean up the component store, so at least you won't be running all the other Disk Clean up functions as well.

If you want to keep the time to a minimum, don't leave it too long between clean ups. I routinely clean the component store after each new cumulative update has installed.

If your system drive is a hard drive then cleanup will take a while. Consider a SSD if you don't have one.

It just took ten-odd seconds to clean up my HDD.
