    Computer Speed

    Hi,

Is there a recommended app that tests the running speed of the computer? I've tried to search the forums to find if there is a thread for this, but all I get is threads about internet speed not computer speeds. I need to see if what I'm doing (mainly adjusting components in Autoruns, disabling/uninstalling progs, etc.) is having any affect, and it's difficult to by just running up some random program.

I would look for a CPU benchmark (there are lots) and run before & after tests.

Really depends on what specifically you are looking at and how to interpret those results. Windows comes with enough tools built in to allow you to understand what is going on.

    Thanks.

When I check, say, task manager when the relevant computers are running exceptionally slowly, it often indicates that there is nothing wrong - CPU, disk, memory, etc. all seem to be normal or low, yet many of the programs running (including task manager, itself) seem to take ages to load and are slow to run. (No malware is detectable.) If I had something that would give me some sort of overall benchmark, than I could analyse the speed as I add new or remove old applications.

All of the tools are there like Perfmon, etc. You cannot just look at one app bring a issue when Windows could be doing something in tbe background and has to lock a process until complete. You also can look at Tracing events which are again built into Windows. Some programs just perform bad period and it is not Windows fault.

Using the below will give you a good all round visual overview [ analysis ] . . .

     Perfmon

    About Perfmon:

The Reliability and Performance Monitor introduced in Windows is a good built-in tool that lets you monitor and study how applications you run, affect your computer’s performance, both in real-time, and by collecting log data for later analysis.

    Basically . . .

Type perfmon /report in the search box and press Enter. The Performance Manager Monitor will automatically Run and diagnose issues that are impacting the PC. It will also recommend solutions for ANY problem found, if any.

    I hope this helps.

If you are just looking to monitor CPU clock and RAM speeds quickly, you can always use a program like CPU-Z:

You can find it here: CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID
