    Clean up

Today I booted my computer to see what looked like the update screen with the 0% etc... except it said it was cleaning up my computer.

How do I turn this off? Anyway to know what it removed?

    Sounds like Disk Cleanup.

I'd be thinking that there is some third party application running on your computer.
You better check what is installed.

After the kb5003214 update C: went up around 5.5 gb. In the past I've been able to use disk cleanup to remove added data from updates but not this time. Is there a certain amount of time that windows gives before it adds the option?

I have seen the same thing which seemed to be an extra step at the end of the installation and configuration of Windows Update procedure which appears before the sign-in screen appears.

I always invoke Windows updates manually each Patch Tuesday and I watch the screen to monitor the progress in case of any problems so I know it was part of the Windows update process. It only happened once or twice but it has not happened for the last two updates.

Maybe some 'special' updates require 'cleaning up' after installation? Just guessing.

This might be the case because I thought it was updating when I walked away (but didn't look closely at the screen) but I did notice the clean up message on the screen when I returned. I know I have disk cleanup turned off because of lost files in the past, probably going back to Win95 but I know it's one of the things I turn off after install so maybe this was it. It was just cleaning up behind an update.

This could also be, the video guys at our church are constantly installing stuff and it was their computer that did this.

I had the same message after Windows Update.
Nothing about third party is installed what could be th cause.

I think this process was always running after Updates but now with a message from Boss.

I've seen 'cleaning up' after an update but not with every update, only a very few. I think it more that it only runs as required, and for most updates it isn't needed.

That is one reason I create monthly system image backups during the week before Patch Tuesday.
--- You could consider checking the status of your anti-virus but do so before creating the system image backup.

Unless you know whatever is going on isn't safe, do not stop the process.

This would be a good time to double-check your Windows Updates history on the date you saw "it was cleaning up my computer."

"Anyway to know what it removed?" Typically that's difficult to know after the fact if it's a clean "cleaning".
