Modern Standby Disabled causes FN keys to stop working back from sleep

    hi guys,

I found this odd thing but i was able to reproduce it 100%. So on a new Zenbook, specifically a 13'' UX325JA-AH006T and this is what happened.

    1. Disabled modern standby as i couldn't get the "normal" power modes
    2. S3 Confirmed back and all modes are back (high, balanced, power saver, ultra etc)

BUT, with that, if you put the PC on sleep, when it resumes, then all the FN keys combos are not working anymore. I was able to always reproduce that. Only "fix" was restart. then they work, up until you put it in sleep, that is - hybernate was working OK instead. no issues.

IS this fairly common on new laptops or a weird combination of this machine? was with latest Win 10 20H2, etc nothing out of the ordinary, standard drivers.

If you put back modern standby then FN keys work fine when resuming from sleep.

    thanks,
    Gabrio

    Gabrio,

All attempts to disable S0 are pretty uncertain so you've actually done quite well.
    - I could not even get as far as S3 coming back on.

I can use the key combination Fn-Esc to switch between the two modes. This is signified on my keyboard by Fn being shown on the Escape key. So have a look at that because it is likely to be the quickest way of coping each time.

Does your computer maker provide a keyboard-related utility that controls function keys?
    - Perhaps you could reinstall that when the problem appears instead of restarting the computer.
    - My utility [Dell] is available through the Control panel, Windows Mobility Center and, on a previous computer, it allowed me to switch between 'Function keys' & 'Multimedia keys'. On my current computer it is only a viewer and changes nothing [I discovered just now].
    - You can make a shortcut to it with this as its target C:\Windows\System32\control.exe /name Microsoft.MobilityCenter

    hiya,

i have actually returned that laptop so i cannot try "new" things, but i can tell you that when i recreate the issue, doing FN key + ESC which would effectively set functions keys / multimedia keys (without the need of pressing FN), as you suggested, does not even work.

The Asus software was installed and everything was up and running - it's just odd, I think they need to change something in the Firmware or tweak something.

I would only expect it to work with keyboards that have a Fn symbol on the Escape key [or perhaps on another key].

But since I never got that far when I tried disabling S0, I did not get the chance to try it in those circumstances [I only tried it in normal working].

    All the best,

actually have you tried this registry flag posted at

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/commen...abling_modern/

    Code:
    reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0
This should disable modern standby if you have Win10 20H1-2 and 21H1

Yes, I have seen that reddit article.

The code you posted is taken from Disabling modern standby - MSDocs

I know how to disable S0.

any other ideas? Asus told me "this is not standard operation" bla bla bla as the machine is tested with modern standby enabled.

Still, my older laptop works fine without modern and FN keys back from sleep.

    any ideas please share

    thanks,
    Gab

    Gab,

No ideas other than possibly searching for a user forum for your brand & model. Most brands have them. Finding somebody else who has done it for your brand & model is likely to be your only chance really.

If the maker did not test it without S0 then all you can do is experiment & hope with no guarantee of success.

Since getting an S0 computer [a tablet with an integrated keyboard], I have added S3 required - obtain direct confirmation from maker to my general statement of requirements for future computer purchases.
