Having the paging file on an SSD and letting Windows manage it.
I use the Virtual Memory/paging file settings as recommended. Use to be in Support, Help was the written recommendation of 1.5 times the physical RAM, earlier version said 2.5 times. Sometimes program installations look for the Virtual Memory and even a Temp folder, especially the heavier-use video editing, database and spreadsheet programs. Back in the early days of having a disk defragging program it was helpful to disable the swap file, reboot and defrag then re-enable the swap file at a max and min number, same for both which then kept all the parts of the file contiguous to each other, less read/write action of the drive. Doing it that way was a separate action from defragging the full disk. Always helpful to reboot after any such change.
I used to use the automatic paging file size. However when I installed MS Flight Simulator 2020 with 16 GB, the game crashed until I manually increased the paging file size. I've since upgraded the memory to 32GB and reset the paging file size to automatic.
The page file is just one aspect of a more complex system designed to improve performance, and must be considered in the context of memory compression. See:
