Speeding up an old laptop - need some help please!

I have an old 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5-520M processor, 2GB of RAM Elitebook. I want to try and speed up the integrated GPU if possible. Besides a new SSD, is there some software out there that might help with FPS? It has a new copy of windows 10 on it with DX 12 - or if there is a hack as well, overclock etc (guessing here)

I have a laptop with an i5-520M, not an HP Elitebook, mine's a Dell Latitude E4310. I have a number of others with processors ranging from an Intel Atom, Celeron, Pentium, up to an i7-6600U.

Of all my integrated GPUs I've found the i5-520M to be the most troublesome/annoying. In VLC I have to disable use of hardware acceleration else it couldn't play some videos correctly. And this wasn't anything to do with Windows 10, I restored its original OEM Win7 and VLC had exactly the same problem.

A cpu intended for a laptop cannot be overclocked, you need an unlocked cpu for that and they are only made for desktop motherboards.

You might try looking on the OEM's support site for an updated Win10 video driver specifically intended for you model, but with a PC that old you'll probably find that support ended with Win7.

Your 2GB RAM is really too small to run x64 Windows 10, and a little tight even for a 32-bit install. If possible, upgrade to at least 4GB, better yet to 8GB.

upgrade ram to 8gb will give you a noticeable post it will increase your shared ram graphics too, otherwise nothing can be done i think apart from ssd you already have.

No, my problems seemed to be specific to the i5-520M's gpu, never seen any such problems with any other processor. And no, Win7 drivers won't help - as I said, I had exactly the same troubles when running Win7 on my i5-520M.

A RAM upgrade is your best shot, that and upgrading to an SSD.

Yeah, I don't even know if it is upgrade-able. I find HP to be no very friendly for tear-downs.
    I did notice this though...

Download Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel(R) XTU)

HP is pretty good with service manuals; try to find one and see what it says about upgrades. Also, the Crucial site can tell you what upgrades it has for your hardware.

A SSD is a must have. It is almost 6 times faster than a HDD
You only have 2G of memory. Integrated GPU use part of that memory. So very little remains for the OS and programs.
If you install 2+2 G I suggest you install Win 10 32 bits
If you install 2+4 or 4+4 G you must install Win 10 64 bits.
