Strange title-display for Windows Security in menu and settings

I have just done a direct upgrade from Win7 Pro to Win10 Pro (version 20H2) on a Lenovo T430 laptop. I'm still tweaking the setup to suit.

While doing so I have noticed that what I think should be the "Windows Security" or "Windows Defender" listings in both the Startup menu and in Settings show a very strange title or label consisting of a long string of explanatory text.

    Best explained by these screenshots...

    In Settings:

Strange title-display for Windows Security in menu and settings-win-10-settings-display-security.jpg

And here is a screenshot showing what appears under "H" in the Win10 Start menu (sorry about the distracting forest-screen background).

Strange title-display for Windows Security in menu and settings-screenshot-1-.jpg

When I mouse over that menu entry the full long string of text appears:

Strange title-display for Windows Security in menu and settings-screenshot-2-.jpg

Why do these strings of text appear rather than a normal app or program title? What should the listing/headings say? And how do I get the correct titles to display?

    See if this tutorial helps...

....you can reset and/or re-register the Windows Security app to hopefully fix it.

    no joy so far...

Well, Bree, this time no joy.....

I tried each of the options in that tutorial.

A Reset in the Settings menu did nothing.

When I pasted the recommended command into the Windows PowerShell, I got an error message saying the command was unrecognised. Here's the screenshot showing the full message:

Strange title-display for Windows Security in menu and settings-screenshot-3-.jpg

I'm afraid I can't interpret that. As I copied-and-pasted from the tutorial, there can't have been a typo error.

So I tried the third option, using Command Prompt. The command recommended in the tutorial appeared to be accepted when I copied it and hit enter. I waited a wee while, then exited the Command screen. No joy. No change in the listed title display in the Start menu, or the heading in the Settings page.

Just in case, I rebooted the laptop. Didn't make any difference.

As i was logged in as Admin, I also checked the situation in a separate (user) account. Same situation: the lengthy text-entry under "H" in the Start menu list, a long text-string heading on the Settings page ... and no entry or listing for "Windows Security" at all under "W" in the menu list.

So the mystery, and the peculiar headings and label, remains....

Please note that the fingerprint reader will not work on that laptop under Win 10.

    E,g, try searching for
    t430 fingerprint driver "windows 10"

Thanks dalchina, but that's not the issue. I did not want, and do not want, to use or enable the fingerprint reader. The question is about how the Windows Security programme is titled, described and displayed in the Start menu and on the Settings page. Whether the fingerprint reader is activated or not seems (to me at least) an unconnected matter.

I know that's not the issue. I am simply providing the information so you are aware of that. Good luck with your issue.

Thanks dalchina.... useful to know that fingerprinting isn't an option on the T430. But I still hope there will be some way of sorting out the problem which I do have - the listing and display headings for Windows Security....

Try an in-place repair install. Should be straightforward if you have already downloaded the install media to usb or ISO.

Straightforward? Ah, not really. I have just tried - twice - using the MCT which carried out the Win7 to Win10 upgrade on this machine yesterday, and a Win10 ISO I had created just a couple of days ago. Neither will play. When the process reaches Step 13 in that Repair-Install tutorial (where in theory I should be able to choose whether to keep Personal files and Apps, Personal files, or Nothing) the only available option is Nothing.

An explanation popped up which I didn't copy verbatim, but essentially it said either the Win 10 I have is in an 'unrecognised directory' (?), or the version I have installed is not the same as the one now being called on for the repair (which doesn't seem right, as I believe both are 20H2).

That leaves me with an unwelcome choice. Either I stay with what I've got, and endure the garbled headings and titles in the Windows Security menu and settings (as in the screenshots posted earlier) - which is messy but at least it works. Or I press on with a repair.... and lose all the apps and settings which I was able to carry forward from the Win7 setup.

Neither is ideal. I had been looking and hoping for Windows to do better than this. It's harsh to say so (and I don't want to provoke any arguments), but this reminds me why I moved over to Linux Mint!

Is there no way of diagnosing (and then repairing) the peculiar titles and menu-labels for Windows Security? That, after all, is little more than a cosmetic issue. Losing all the apps and settings for everything else, in the hope of putting that right, feels like a high price to pay....

You will get 'Nothing' offered if the base language version is different from the one currently installed.

There is another possible reason. What build of 20H2 do you have currently installed?

Unfortunately there was a bug in the earlier builds of 20H2 that, when asked by Setup, misrepresented the currently installed build as being too high to allow apps to be kept. As long as your installed Windows is build 19042.662 or higher then this bug has been fixed and you'll be able to keep everything.

The current install ISO for 20H2 is 19042.631, so if you haven't run windows update since upgrading to 20H2 you'd still be on 19042.631. In that case check for updates in Windows Update and let it install the latest cumulative update. You'd then be on 19042.928 and the repair install should now let you keep files and installed apps.
