Does anyone notice this when running CHKDSK on the boot drive?

    Very simple -

    In a Command Prompt:

    CHKDSK C: /F /V

OS says it will complete upon reboot.
Starts at that time and does not cleanly complete - circle with dots never ends.

Have to force a hard shutdown and then boot back up to the desktop.

    Ideas?

You state "circle with dots never ends" so could it just be taking a lot longer than you expect?

Microsoft web page does warn about the 'f' switch: - "If you use chkdsk /f* on a very large disk or a disk with a very large number of files (for example, millions of files), chkdsk /f might take a long time to complete.".

How long have you left it for before forcing a shutdown?

    Hi.

It should complete on my production system in a couple of minutes.
However, I left it going for an hour without completion.

    Obviously, some sort of anomaly.

Could there be something else that is set to run at startup and the two things are in conflict?

For example, my Norton 360 anti-virus is set to 'Aggressive' mode, which I believe kicks-in before Windows starts.

Point is that it just doesn't complete on the first go.

I cannot even force a hard shutdown at times from the power button, so I have to unplug it from the mains.
Once restarted, it continues where it left off, completes, then quickly reboots.

    Strange.

    Very strange.

I assume it is a HDD that you are checking and not an SSD? See ChkDsk damages file system on SSDs

chkdsk /f takes a while to run. What is the size of the drive you are scanning?

    ....circle with dots never ends.

Well it's probably going to be a very long list of filenames.....

    @Bree
Good question, have had to deal with a couple of clients a few years ago that kept confusing the terms of FAT32 with 32-bit.

LOL. Actually CHKDSK /F - my bad. Sometimes I change to the /R switch.
