CHKDSK /R takes a very long time, but CHKDSK /F shouldn't take more than a few minutes unless it's finding problems that it needs to fix. CHKDSK /R can take hours upon hours.
Have you gone into Event Viewer to see if it's left any logs for the CHKDSK attempts? (I think it's under Wininit as the event source)
Also the /V switch isn't just limited to FAT32 drives, as it says it also displays any cleanup messages for NTFS drives.

...but the chkdsk logs are stored in System Volume Information. With TreeSizeFree run as an administrator you can read them directly.
Yes, I find it more convenient. It's also useful for reading the chkdsk logs of a drive that has come from another machine.
And with TreeSize Free you can copy them from there and save them elsewhere if you like. I have even put the old logs back again after a complete reformat of a drive as I wanted to preserve the record.
