Image icons in folders messed up

Hi, I've been having this problem lately. It doesn't always happen but is getting more frequent. Rebooting fixes it temporarily. I have Win version 20H2.

    How do I fix this?

I have this and most folders set to "Large Icons" in the "View" setting. When it isn't working right, they look like this:

Also when I click the "View" dropdown, the whole "View" section is grayed out:

I don't have an answer for you, but if you'll check and tell us whether you have your File and Folder Options panel set this way, maybe that will move us closer to guessing what your problem is.

Wisewiz: This laptop is about 1˝ years old. When new, I set my folder options and have not changed them.

On a fresh boot the folders work as I have them set, and may be fine for hours, or several days. But something in the background seems to be corrupting them sometimes, and it is getting more frequent (I run spyware cleaners etc. on a regular basis).

Another thing: When my computer is in this mode and I open a folder with images, there will be a green bar in the folder address window that will start on the left side and load to the right, like it is loading the icons below or something (see below). But it rarely seems to finish and even if it does it doesn't help anything.

Another thing I have noticed in the past week or two, when this happens sometimes my desktop icons are not clickable and I must reboot.

This is something like the green bar I was describing; I just sketched it in:

    That's a self-evidently important clue.

'Cleaning' activities can have unexpected consequences.

I suggest you disable any automated or scheduled cleaning you have configured or is undertaken by 3rd party tools for, say, a week and cease and desist from any such manual activities. Reset any 3rd party tools to default settings if you're using programs that purport to stop telemetry.

Assuming you have not already damaged your installation in some way, see if your problem has gone away after a week, say.

Depending on your results, then report the outcome in the hope that some repair can be effected.

    Then consider e.g.

That's the bar that indicates that the computer is searching the designated space. There should be an X and a recycle arrow on the right of the bar space when it happens. Those let you stop the search or re-run it, respectively.

But I'm absolutely clueless about why this is happening in an ordinary folder that just happens to have images in it, unless there are many, many images, and images of significant file-size.

I'm bowing out of this thread for now. Sorry to be of no help whatsoever. That happens sometimes, and some of the people it happens to actually realize it.

... searching or processing the folder contents e.g. generating thumbnails.

post #3 gives significant background of Somebody50's usage patterns. The impact of that must be eliminated first before considering Windows problems as per my previous.

So I've done nothing as far as cleaning, but the icon problem still happens SOMETIMES after the PC has been running a few hours. Reboot, problem goes away.

I just noticed the green bar and it actually worked correctly on a folder with a lot of image icons, but I had just rebooted.

Thanks. Please consider the links I posted above, then this:

Sometimes you may notice File Explorer loads icons slowly when you open a folder with lots of files. Increasing the size of the icon cache may help.
