SFC /scannow repairs-now many warnings in Device manager

After doing SFC /scannow I have warnings on : all Storage AND IDE/ATA controllers as well as Display adapter

    Hi

I have a brand new motherboard and processor which I installed last March.

ASUS Prime B460-Plus (latest UEFI Bios)

    i5-10400

WD BLUE NAND SSD 500TB (5 months old)

WD My Passport external HDD (4 months old)

OLD WD HDD on PCIe adapter

Windows 10 PRO 20h2 (Built 19042.928) all up to date.

    All latest drivers

    1) After issues (happened on different days bu talways same number of bytes from file error) with doing Backup images with Macrium (Verification failed reading 65545 bytes from file. Error code = 23) at around 90 and 97% on an WD Passport external drive, I used Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics - WinDlg (DLGDIAG for Windows) v1.37 and did an extended test 5 hours or more which found no error as well as a the quick one that tests the cable as well and it found nothing. CHKDSK found nothing either.

I did the tests after I noticed that around the same time of the backup errors there were multiple instances of event id 7 "bad block on disk2" (which is the external drive) and some event id 11 "the driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2".

I also have many event id regarding fail to read errors of shadowcopies (different ones) as well as master table and NTFS errors too many different ones to state here and not only on the days of the failed backups.

    2) So last night I executed SFC /scannow which found errors and repaired. After this I noticed that all of a sudden, in device manager, the Display adapter had a yellow warning. I checked in properties it says the device is working properly and is the latest from Intel. I knew Windows update had the Intel driver as an optional update but the one just before the latest so I installed it. Nothing changed. I did a shutdown and restart just in case. When I went back I now had all storage as well as all IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers with the warning as well. Nothing in properties to suggest anything is wrong.

I had prepared a filtered view of System Events but I it's a .evtx extension and not allowed here.

I know I have 2 problems here but just wanted to give context to chain of events.

    Thanks

Hi, the verification performed by MReflect is purely on the integrity of the file on disk without reference to anything else.
Therefore you can reasonably assume that disk may have problems, and the MR image file is corrupt.

    You also report
I did the tests after I noticed that around the same time of the backup errors there were multiple instances of event id 7 "bad block on disk2"
Please download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - best instant report right on its GUI I know.
Post a screenshot of its GUI for each drive of interest.

You may also find performing a surface scan of your external disk informative. E.g. Macrorit diskscanner (free).
I it's a .evtx extension and not allowed here.
If you zip disallowed extensions you can upload that, subject to a size limit of 4Mb. Larger files- if you think someone can actually read really large files usefully- can be uploaded to a suitable cloud service and a link posted.

There are no warnings on any of your posted Device manager entries. Enlarge your picture and you'll see that those are just fancy icons.

This is what Device manager warnings look like

I don't understand why I haven't seen them before since I have used device manager more times then I can count. I just read that the icon is a PCI card icon (from microsoft advisor). I don't know what pci cards have to do with usb or sata ports for drives or controllers. Anyway thank you for clearing that up. :) Now I'm left with my event id errors and external drive.

Yes thank you. I saw your post. Regarding Macrium yes what you saud is of course expected. The image was not created when there was a verification error.

It is late here and will do that tomorrow. Just installed Sentinel. Will post results soon.

    Thanks again

    Hi

So here are the results for My Passport external HDD.

No bad sectors as its reported by both Sentinel and Macrorit. What I don't understand is how Sentinel can give this info only 10 seconds after launching the program.

So weak sectors only and on their page they say it could be for different reasons and give the drive a little more than a year. I just bought the thing. It also says : "At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further". How do they know what kind of warranty someone took on it or do they mean it is not bad enough to be given a replacement? On my old HDD it gives 100% for both performance and health, yet says that there were problems communicating with the host and says it has only a 100 days left of life. On my C:win 10 SSD it gives 100% on both yet they say it has only around 3 years of life (just bought it as well). Anyway here are the results for the external HDD.

SFC /scannow repairs-now many warnings in Device manager-sentinel-overview.png
SFC /scannow repairs-now many warnings in Device manager-sentinel-smart-results.pngSo what do you think? I tested all power supply outputs prior to installing new MOBO and they were A1. Also is it normal for Sentinel to close by itself after 10-15 minutes of being minimized?

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, thanks. I had a somewhat similar situation when creating my next routine differential image of an internal SSHD (hybrid). Macrium failed to complete imaging it; HDS reported weak sectors. In this case a surface scan did show some failed sectors which had been remapped, so clearly degradation was futher on. The drive was perhaps 6 years old, Hitachi. (Hitachi and Toshiba tend to get better reliability reports than WD or Seagate).

I replaced it and as an experiment formatted it. HDS then gave a somewhat better report of it. (Can't expect software to fix hardware).

You know that your image file is corrupt; if you were to reformat that drive, it's possible sectors would be remapped (that's also automatic managed by device firmware) so you could get a bit more life out of it.

Would I rely on it? No.

If you don't have a license for HDS you can set up continuous monitoring and reporting against SMART thresholds using Crystal Diskinfo (free).

HDS is a particularly good prog by a careful developer with proprietary algorithms. Have a look at the site.. I was impressed by his detailed response in one particular case someone raised.

Well mine is barely 4 months old and still under WD warranty. I also paid for a replacement warranty from the store where I bought it. So I should return it then? And what do you make of Sentinel statement about warranty?

And what if its a problem with power? Anyway to test this?

Feel free to test the disk connected in other environments.

Hardware can fail at any time. Reliability is a matter of statistics. MTBF does not mean the device will last at least that long. Have you heard of the bathtub curve?

Feel free to research this on HDS's forum- or ask a question

Thanks everyone I appreciated all of your help.

After opening a ticket with Western Digital they told me to ask for a replacement.
