    Defrag SSD

I have read defragging a SSD (Solid State drive) can greatly shorten its life so i have turned off scheduled maintenance for C & D discs however it seems to turn itself back on again over time (i am not sure when) is there a way of uninstalling windows 10 defrag or a different way of forcing it to stop which will stop it permanently?

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, Windows 10 is smart enough to distinguish between SSDs and HDDs and will treat them differently for defrag purposes.

See my settings below. Those are default settings that have not given me any problems.

Not necessary. Optimisation is intelligent enough to know the difference between an SSD and an HDD. Scheduled maintenance will only retrim an SSD, and then only once a month - regardless of the frequency you set.

Are your C: and D: drives on two different physical hard drives, one an SSD and the other an HDD?

The only time I have ever seen the scheduled maintenance for all drives turned back on is after a major feature update, such as 1909 to 2004. It's one of the things that always gets reset to the defaults (I have a little check-list of settings I need to change after a feature update, and that's one of them).

You know that you can choose to schedule optimisation for some drives but not others?

Yes they are two separate physical drives.

I wasn't aware you can choose to schedule optimisation for some drives but not others but what i didn't get was why its showing the SSD was trimmed 9 days ago when i was sure it was turned off, i have made sure both are off and will keep an eye on it and see what happens.

I will report back in a few days if things change again.

    Thanks for your help.

If you want real full control , just disable the service "Optimize drives" ( set it to manual) .
Trim manual once a month............best practice for your precious SSD !!

There are only limited tasks I trust Windows to successfully complete, retrim & defrag would be two of them. I verified this performance on a daily basis for months after installing an SSD. Now, I don't worry about it.

C: & L: are partitions on an NVMe.
    D: & F: are partitions on a HDD.

Would W10 be able to handle a hybrid HDD?
