Nick, this one? From 3 years ago?
Why is Windows defragging my SSD?
Thanks! I had about 15 tabs open on 2 browsers, so my GUID cache was pretty taxed. I didn't explicitly time it but it may have been even less than 30 seconds (I said less than 1 minute just to pad for error).
Given the very short execution time, I'm presuming this doesn't incur much wear at all to the SSD?
The actual Trim operation's wear and tear on the SSD is minuscule. All it's doing is erasing a pool of marked-unused cells in the controller. It does this to eliminate the need for the cell to be erased prior to write by the app and controller. Makes writing much faster. Obviously more complicated than that, but that's the gist.
As others have said, windows 10 defragmentation is optimized for solid state drives. However, defragging your ssd the old fashioned way is bad if you do it too many times, as it causes the ssd to wear down with time.
