Defrag SSD

Modern SSD disk controllers will ignore a defrag command if one is given. Retrim commands may also be ignored by the disk controller. Reason is simple, disk firmware and the disk controller are in charge of such operations. They're also is in charge of garbage collection, wear leveling, and over provisioning. All of these processes work together to maintain the health of an SSD. Note that disk controller manufacturers algorithms support Trim whereas Windows sends Retrim to the disk controller which accepts the information but may not act on it.

Bottom line is that for SSD disks the firmware and disk controller is in charge and makes all decisions on disk maintenance. Most of what you read on the net about all of this is from 20+ years ago and does not apply today.

As you can tell i am a bit clueless when it comes to SSD's and i have taken advice from searching the internet which as has been stated is not the best place to get it.

So the solution is turn scheduled optimisation on for both SSD & HDD set it for monthly and forget about it?

Yes, but if you just turned on scheduled optimization for monthly then you would be taking our advice from the internet.

While the above is basically true its not random advice form tyre kickers i am taking in this forum its a Windows 10 advice from several different people in the same forum answering the same question i am sure if the advice was wrong people would have said so.

Plus....it's the way Microsoft set it up to begin with. Contrary to some popular beliefs, Microsoft is not always wrong.

I just recently checked my SSD (1TB Samsung 860) and Windows indicated that it was 32 days since the last retrim and suggested doing it. So I did. It took less than 1 minute! Is that normal?
