CMOS battery holds the BIOS configuration sets and keep the clock running, even if the computer is off.
When the battery is discharged, you loose the BIOS configuration (it loads the defaults) and date and time is corrupted.
When you start the computer, check time on the taskbar. As your computer is a new Z270, I don't think that the battery is discharged.
You can run HWinfo. It's a portable, don't need to install, extract and run. Launch Sensors only and under voltages you'll see Vbat that should be higher than 3 v.

Under power configuration you can set the time to computer to hibernate. Turning it off doesn't mean that it wont do a fast start (hybrid hibernation)
To turn off all kind of hibernation, on all power plans, (fast start will also be disabled) open a CMD window as administrator and type
    powercfg.exe /hibernate off

Followed Megahertz' ideas and it work OK after a restart. Will need to see what appens after I turn it off and on again.

What is the considered opinion about shutting down a computer at the end of the day?

Why would you not shut it down at the end of the day?

Most on here use "Sleep" and don't "shut down".

You might want to dive into the sleep settings.

Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings ...you can choose how soon the computer sleeps after you have stopped using it, or you can continue on to... Change advanced power settings, for even more control.

As for whether or not to shut down... that's depends on your situation. If the electric bill isn't a major concern... then just set the computer to "sleep" instead.

Another option you have is an In-Place Upgrade, which is a repair install of Windows 10, that leaves all your programs and data intact.

After an In-Place Upgrade, if you still have shutdown or cold start problems, then it's at least NOT
    a Windows 10 problem.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Thanks. It seems to be OK now, but I didn't have the problem every time I started up. We shall see.

See post from Ghot about just using "sleep."

Personal preference. My laptop has nothing but SSDs and I don't need to keep any apps open when not in use so full shutdown works just as well for me. I have to wait an extra 5 seconds for booting.

    Agree.

When I park my car I don't keep the motor running and when not in use I turn off my TV. Why should I keep a computer on when not in use?

I always turn off my computer and switch off the surge arrest.
Lighting discharges, even far away, can produce high voltages on the consumer line that can damage electronics devices.
