    Windows 10 Search Lag

I’m having an issue with searching for apps from the Start Menu. Normally, I search for apps by hitting the Windows key and then start typing - the results have always been instant. Now when I try to search using the same method, there is a delay of at least one second before results appear. This may not seem like a serious issue, but I’m used to instantaneous results.

To see if this is a system-wide problem, I created a new admin user account. When logged in to that new account, searches done in the manner described above are instant - absolutely no delay. From this experiment, I can only conclude that there’s an issue with the account I use every day (the one that has the search results delay).

Is there a way I can troubleshoot this?

Hi, first, in the account of interest please check search indexing is working normally.

Basic check - open Indexing Options, note the number of items indexed.
Add one file in a folder that is indexed, of a type that is indexed.
    Check that number increments.

Also run the search indexing troubleshooter and post the results.

Another check: have the task manager open, then try to search as you have been.
Is there any sign of excessive resource usage in that second or so of delay?

There is an indexer diagnostics app you can try:
Download Indexer Diagnostics to fix Windows Search issues
Use Indexer Diagnostics App for Windows Search Issues in Windows 10

What is your Windows build? I don't recognise 1079.

    You can reset Windows Search.
Option 3 also resets indexed locations to default, in case the start menu is not being indexed as it should.

Thanks for replying! Here are my results:

    Basic check: PASSED

Search Indexing Troubleshooter: “Windows search is not working: Fixed”

Task Manager: No excessive resource usage when searching

Indexer diagnostic app: No longer available at the link you provided

    Windows build: 2004, build 19041.804

Here’s an update: I also tried a safe boot and the problem went away. This leads me to think that there’s a service or services running that are interfering with Windows Search. Is there a way to track down the service or services that might be causing the problem?

Hmm, when I flagged up the fact it wasn't available to Brink (admin) to me in the UK, he said (see comments) it was for him in the US.

Anyway, not important. Probably something MS is toying with.

    Ok, seems an account-related problem.
Given it works in Safe Mode, you could compare that with what you see after a clean boot.

You could try rebuilding the search index.

You can also try resetting search as I described, albeit that will reset search locations.

I think that I may have solved the issue. I followed Step 3 in this thread:

Turn On or Off Search online and include web results in Windows 10

After installing the reg file and restarting Windows Explorer search results are now instant again. I’ll have to work with the system for another day or so to see if this is indeed the solution.

    Thanks for your help!
