I replaced an old motherboard (Z87) with one a newer one (H270), including CPU and memory. Restart and shutdown now takes nearly 10 minutes. Perfmon /report hangs in less than a minute when I try to run it. Seems there's no way to avoid a clean install. Any ideas about something I might try before resorting to that? This is my Insider DEV machine. The latest build (21332) did install after several tries and is activated.
you could try a repair install. download the newest version of windows and boot from that and then select repair windows.
it then will look for the proper drivers to install.
@larc919, if you have difficulty getting your current installation working and you simply want to know if a clean installation will work fine on your system without affecting your current installation, see this excellent video from Kari:

That procedure will add a second Windows installation allowing you to dual boot, but the great thing about it is that when you are done testing it's almost ridiculously easy to get rid of because that whole copy of Windows simply gets installed in a VHD. It is NOT run as a virtual machine, it boots natively to that VHD, so it's as as easy to uninstall as deleting the VHD and making a tiny change to the boot menu.
Sven1458, I think if booted from the Win 10 Installation drive it won't be a Repair option, only a Clean install.
You will only be able to do a repair install of Windows 10 from within Windows 10. You will not be able to do a repair install at boot or in Safe Mode.
To do a Repair install you run Win 10 installation setup from running windows.
That's quite a leap from a Z87 to H270. Did you upgrade the drivers for the mobo after Windows booted? If not that is probably at root of the issue.
Thanks for the suggestions. The problem turned out to be the motherboard itself. Troubles got progressively worse until it wouldn't post at all. I first thought it might be the PSU, but tried a new one I had ordered for a different machine and results were exactly the same. Plus the existing PSU checked out 100% when I tested it. Ordered a replacement motherboard and CPU since I couldn't find a reasonably priced new board to support the existing 7th generation processor.
BTW, Railtech, I did install chipset and other drivers for the H270 board and already have the latest ones ready for the 300 series board once it's delivered on Sunday and I get it installed.
Sounds like you are good for now. I have had a few dead boards right off the bat so yeah, it happens. Good luck with the next one.
