DWM spikes in iGPU Usage (Dell)

For some reason, starting recently, DWM has been spiking my iGPU usage (up to over 80% worst case scenario) and thus bogging down the PC. In addition to very slow performance in games, this creates a wide array of issues like slower window animations. For some reason, this makes the GameDVR Service also spike in GPU usage (both weren’t like this before then). What should I do?

    Recently I installed the KB4601382 preview on 10 20H2.

    Intel UHD i5-1035G1.

Oh and I’ll add that I am using the OEM Intel gpu drivers (updated just last month to 27.20.100.8681), maybe that could be the issue

DWM acts normal when nothing is happening, it is window sizing and rendering a game that makes it spike in GPU Usage

I’ve been looking into trying to install the Intel drivers (instead of using the OEM drivers) and hoping it works from there, is it a good idea to do that?

Forgot to mention that I have the lappy hooked up to a 1080p monitor

"it is window sizing and rendering a game that makes it spike in GPU Usage"

That is normal, nothing is wrong. The whole point of having a iGPU or GPU is that it is used when required.

Obviously the more complex the Window that is resized will mean a greater spike.

Most games are designed for Nvidia or AMD graphics chipsets rather than iGPUs. The minimum requirements are usually listed for those, however in almost all cases an iGPU can be used with no problem other than a reduced performance.

It does not matter about the version of your driver.

    Thank you for your response.

Still a bit weird this happens out of nowhere...

The Dell "gaming" laptops have both Intel CPU graphics and either an NVIDIA or AMD Radeon. Regular PC apps the Intel Video is used and for gaming it switches to the NVIDIA or AMD.

For example, I have an Inspiron 15 Gaming 5577 model. It has both Intel CPU and NVIDIA graphics.

However, a limitation, the HDMI output on most (actually all I've seen reported on the Dell forum) is wired to the Intel CPU graphics, not the NVIDIA or AMD.

I have the Inspiron 3493, far from a gaming lappy... bought only June last year. I reinstalled Windows August, and haven’t performed a reinstall since then.

Searching for “DWM GPU high usage” yields Microsoft support and a post on the Dell subreddit regarding this very issue. Another post on the w10 sub mentions they are on a Dell computer and have the same issue.

I will shut down the PC to let it cool down first.
