Slow startup after updating last week

    Hi everyone,

Anyone else experiencing super slow startup on win10 x64 from the last update over a week ago or so? (I didn't update due to work schedule, but whatever the update was previous to last week). I've currently updated to the latest windows update and it seems a little better. But it's staying at the initial black boot screen for a long time.

    Anyone else with this issue?

Yeah It does seem like it has slowed down quite a bit. I don't know if its just windows or does it have to do with what computer you are using .

I have an i7, 32gb ram, ssd pc for 3d work. I recently installed windows last november. From what I recall, windows was the only thing I updated (as its my work PC). I do have an AOMEI backup if all else fails. It usually boots up under 30 seconds or so.

Ok. I read an article from last year saying to turn off "fast boot". This fixed the problem. Startup to desktop in under 20 seconds again now.

By "Fast boot" do you mean "Fast start-up"?

If so then turning it Off will increase your boot time, not reduce it. Here is what you might have experienced: -

Fast start-up creates a file (hiberfil.sys) that includes all boot info and it usually work fine but it can become corrupt causing slow boots. See What Is hiberfil.sys and How Do I Delete It? .
With Fast start-up enabled it is always good practice to use 'Restart' about every month or sooner. This causes the PC to boot from total scratch ignoring the hiberfil.sys file and at the next shutdown a new hiberfil file will be created from the new data.

Give it a try. Switch Fast start-up back on and check. You can always switch it back off.

Thanks I will try that. I usually disable the hibernate as I never use it (and saving space).

I've reinstalled windows. There was an issue with my ssd it seems, as AOMEI Backupper was saying there was some sector issues? Resolved that by reformating the drive, and all installed fine.

I'm starting to feel sure some part of my hardware is on its way out (most likely suspect is a PCIe card with 4 USB3 ports, but im not sure). Is there a tool to check what it could be? (slowest componet to load, or other info tool i can use at boot/shutdown?). The weird thing is now it's kind of random: either a super slow shutdown, or startup as mentioned. Or when I click restart (it doesnt respond to it for the longest time).

As mentioned, I've just installed windows again (and latest updates), no programs installed except chrome. I've logged into my MS account during install. I'm wondering if that took any tweaks I may have made to the system previously (in case thats the issue)?

    Thanks for any tips.

    Hi BleepingCrazy,

Many of the larger updates do tend to revert our tweaks. I'd suggest keeping a file somewhere not on C:\ that lists your preferred tweaks and possibly how to accomplish them again.

As for Fast startup, many users like myself that use SSDs on the OS tend to disable hibernate using an Administrative Command Prompt. This also disables Fast startup and reduces unnecessary writes.

    Code:
    powercfg -h off

Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 10

If you search 'fast startup with SSD tenforums.com', you'll learn why.

Fast Startup in W10. Enable or disable?

    What is “Fast” Startup doing?

Thanks. That's one of the first things I do (mostly for space and find it a bit annoying as I'm a 3d artist, so need to keep it from sleeping while I work). Good to know some extra reasoning behind it!

I was just writing a new version of my tweaks, the old one is from 2017, but I don't change much anymore as win10 has been so robust. :)

I know some things about PCs/windows, but nowhere near knowledgeable enough for these things (yet). Sorry, I'm not up on the jargon, it's also what makes it hard to find the right solution before asking here.

Ignore the Focusrite, i haven't installed the driver yet. but i never had the others flagging up before. when I try to update them, says it can't find it.

meanwhile, I have this list. should I install them? Haven't seen a list like this in the past either.

So, is there any tool to check any internal hardware issues?

I just installed all of the listed driver updates, and no flags in device manager now. But is this a new thing with the latest version of win10pro? It was always fine on previous installs.

    You're very welcome.

There is just so many aspects of Windows to learn, it's nearly impossible to keep up with every change. There are more than a few experts here at Ten Forums and I'd guess that even they get surprised and learn new things whenever M$ throws another challenge. All that to say, you're not alone in your quest for Windows type knowledge.

For our next adventure, the device manager. The 'Other devices' appears for several driver-related reasons and to get your attention to a deficiency.

    a missing driver
a driver that's not compatible with your newly loaded OS
a device with an unsigned driver

I've rarely been successful updating drivers using the device manager in Windows, sometimes it works though.
I admit, that belief may be the result of using the older versions of OS from years gone by.
Sometimes Windows update will do the job such as the list of driver updates you posted.
The product manufacturer's site is usually best for current mother boards and/or devices.

Some users choose to disable driver updates from M$ as they occasionally cause headaches.
Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

For older devices, use the device manufacturer's site like Intel or AMD. Just tread carefully, updating strictly to correct operational deficiencies or if you have knowledge of a security fix related to a device you have.

Some users just update because it's something new and available. The chronic update individual will likely add unnecessary challenges to their PC use and others just enjoy troubleshooting Windows.

That list looks like the results of an OS update and I see from your post update below, you've completed them already without incident. Excellent!

I'm a conservative type user when it comes to device updates. Right or wrong, I would have likely completed that list in groups or blocks of like devices. That way if anything goes sideways, I know exactly where the fault happened.

There are many all-in-one type apps for verifying performance related aspects of your PC, most are more trouble than they're worth. There are apps to identify slow startup related issues and they are worthwhile depending on your circumstance and/or interest in learning to understand and solve Windows related problems yourself.

    Hi folks

I agree 100% W10 pro is now running as Slow as molasses - goodness knows what bloat Ms has inserted into the currrent insider builds etc.

Currently for email I'm loading up a Windows XP Virtual machine system and using Offfice (outlook) 2010 - for email etc .
Who needs all the bells and whistles of Outlook /365 etc just for sending / receiving private e-mails. It Runs like greased lightning compared to current W10 Pro X-64. !!!!

I've loaded up the VM, composed the email and sent it while Office 2019 is still starting Outlook. !!!!!

I really don't know what's in Windows currently but it really shouldn't be "This stodgy" - a 1GB RAM assigned XP VM with pass thru 2 virt cpu's and "native" I/O even though the I/O is on a virtualised IDE controller runs absolutely rings around current W10.

I hope those used to dabbling around with W10 can sort out the current poor performance of W10.

BTW I've also got a Virtual W2K19 server as well and that also runs rings around W10 performance wise -- OK it's a server so I expect it to be lean and mean. Office 2019 runs fine on W2K19 server BTW. so it's not Office 2019 that's the problem.

So please Ms c'mon here and sort out the Stodge. !!!

I'm reasonably OK with optimising I/O performance etc and aren't running a lot on the W10 system so current level of performance is beginning to get unacceptably poor compared to earlier releases of W10 IMO.

    Cheers

Thanks! Normally, everything installs fine at the start (driver wise) then with an update or 2 for windows. But this time I had that list which never happened before (or those driver issues).

I couldn't agree more! I've just been having so many issues lately whether it's my pc or windows, (or a mix?)...that I just said...let's go! haha (I do have an AOMEI Backupper backup just before doing the updates...so thats my fail-safe). I work in 3d and there are a lot of updates between all of the apps, and generally its some new update from windows that makes things go bonkers, until the 3d apps or windows have a fix.

So, more things point towards my PCIe usb3 hub card. Is there any specific way to troubleshoot that? I just came home from a walk, (I have sleep turned off, etc). But when I came back, the focusrite audio and one of my external drives popped up as if they had just been connected. I really think the local power outage (which happened a few times in one day a few months ago), didn't do my hardware any good.

Jimbo, I feel your pain. But overall I thought win10 has been pretty steady the past year (better than I've ever experienced). Just some recent updates seem to have done something.

The device manager was clear, but now it's started flagging up again. But my drives are coming and going on the PCIe USB3 card. Is this a sign that it's failing or is it something else within windows? Thanks
