Getting a Cooling Fan Error on my HP Laptop

I have a Windows 10 HP laptop, 17.3 in. that I bought new in 2019. It's lightly used by me and appears to be clean. I'm the only user. During the first year, it was hardly used at all and kept in it's own draw in my den. This past year I use it around an hour a day, no gaming, just regular use. I still use the cloth protector over the keyboard when I close it after shut down.

Been getting an error and blue screen during start up, not all the time, but sometimes. It says 90B and I do hit enter sometimes to use it anyway. Like I say, many times it's not even on for an hour. I vacuumed the vents and then used canned air. Did not help.

I've been to HP support and didn't see anything that could help, tried to use their chat feature and was caught in a loop, never getting a human. I went into Device Manager and thought I may need a driver update, but the result was the computer had the driver it should have, no updates.

My question now, since I really can't understand why I'm having this problem, is what can I do that's safe and easy to see why this is happening and how I can fix it at home.

Is there something on this laptop where I can see why it's overheating and what is causing this error? Is there something already on the computer that would test the temperature? I don't know much about computers, and would appreciate any advice.

I can only notice the sound of the fan running sometimes, lately it can sound louder for a couple of minutes at startup or in use, that doesn't last long. Like I say I don't use it often and never even took notice of fan sound before the error started.

The drawer in the den is thick wood, like the desk. I'm in Colorado and the temps are not extreme. My den has a large pine tree outside the window, so it never gets direct sun or too hot. In winter I have a floor vent across the room that is under a loveseat and only slightly cracked open, not much heat coming from there. My house never gets very cold or hot, mostly 60s or 70s in winter. Summer my thremostat can read low to mid 80, but the house is well shaded and never feels hot. No central air either.

Only my husband and I live here, we're retired. There is no work being done in the den area, I'm only there when I'm on my desktop computer, like I am now. Not much happening in this room. I never installed any apps on the laptop, I'm shy about making any changes to my computers, as I don't want anything to go wrong, nobody with computer knowledge around to help if I get in a bind.
@Macboatmaster, it sounds like a hard reset might be what I need to do. I assumed it was overheating, but I couldn't imagine why. Going out today, but I'll check out that link when I can on the laptop, thanks.

I suggest you install Open Hardware Monitor
It's a portable, don't need to be installed, just extract and run. I extracted to C:\Program Files (x86)\HardwareMonitor.
Under options select run on Windows startup, Start minimized etc.
It will show current, min and Max CPU temperatures. If it rises above 80ºC you have a cooling problem that must be fixed.

Rem.: Laptops normally don't have a fan speed sensor.

system
in the search bar on the taskbar
when system information appears above click on it
the system information window will open and it will tell you at the top of the main page the version - for example
19041 is 2004

2. When you bought it, the laptop was probably on 18362 which was 1903
The reason I ask is if the laptop has been turned on so infrequently and for such short periods of time, it may never have had chance to update as it should.

3. Certainly that would be true for the first year when you say it was hardly used and even now when it is used for an hour (approx) a day, depending on how it is setup, it may not even update in that hour.

4. I know you say you have checked device manager, but that is not how it is done on Windows 10 - you open settings which is the icon next to the clock - to the right of it - you click that and then all settings and then update and security and then windows updates and on that window it will show you - on the main page either
You are up to date
and underneath that may be a feature update to the latest version of windows if you do have that

5. Below there towards the bottom of the page is
View Update history
click that and you will see the date when the latest updates were installed.

6. So please post the details from the system information re the version number
and from the settings update and security - windows update - installed updates the date of the topmost entry

DO NOT attempt to update at this stage please until we know if that 90B warning is actually signifying a fault or has been brought about by the infrequent and indeed perhaps insufficient use of the laptop.

It showed 10.0.19041, Build 19041.

The update says ut to date, Feature 8/2020, Quality 2/2021

Just a comment, don't know about the startup but users can be surprised by the blockage in the fins of a cooling device on a Notebook/Laptop when having household pets, fine hairs otherwise not seen can cause the blockage which affects cooling. Most times the cleaning requires some disassembly of the computer just to get to the cooling system which usually is a copper 'pipe' from the attachment at the CPU leading to the fan with the fins. Sometimes just blowing out the openings in the case with canned compressed air made for the purpose will help.

Thanks, I did use vacuum and canned air, and there was no sign at all of any dust at all. I only use it on the desk or table, no pets near it, and I shut it down and put it away right after each use, been babying it really, since I bought it.
