    Hello @Harry Flatters,

One other thing that would clarify the above with regard to it being related to Startup . . .

     Autoruns for Windows

Autoruns allows you to Disable problem Startup items.

    > Website => Autoruns for Windows - Docs.Microsoft
    > Direct Download => Autoruns for Windows - SysInternals

    I hope this helps!
I will certainly download this for future startup problems - thanks

Well you, my man, are a bloody marvel. I unplugged the card reader and bingo! back to a 5 second boot to the login page.

Can I ask a couple of questions?

    1) Why would/should an empty USB card reader cause all this aggravation.
    2) For my education and future reference, can you pop up a screen shot of WPA that shows where you found this.
    3) One of my earlier theories from WPA was that autochk was causing the delay, but I knocked it out in the registry for drives C & D but didn't think about it for the card reader drives F & G. Was that the problem that autochk was possibly hanging up/timing out on empty drives?
Just bumping this so @zinou sees it.

Sorry, didn't mean to break protocol. I just didn't want him to miss to how grateful I was.

E-mail's been flaky for a couple of days - problems with an Exchange server. No doubt I'll get flooded with notifications soon

Hi @zinou - what did you think of my hypothesis regarding autochk, or was I barking up the wrong tree. Also would love to see where you spotted the problem using WPA.

    Thanks again.

To understand the tool you need to understand the Windows boot process and it's different phases...

the delay happened when Windows was initialising and starting devices. you can check that in the Generic event graph under Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PnP

Windows has detected a plug and play device and was trying to start it. but for some reason the device was not responding in time. maybe due to power problem or something else !

Or possibly just because there was no media in the card reader slots?

I'll try an experiment with the reader plugged in and with media in the slots.

So my theory about autochk doesn't hold water?

    Thanks again for the help.
