    Disk cleanup advice...

I have several small partitions on Disk 0, a 2 TB Samsung Evo Pro SSD. I am wondering which of them, if any, are essential to the good working of my Windows 10 system. Perhaps some are left-overs from my foray into a dual boot with Linux Mint. I recoverd the main Mint partitions but I don't want to go further without expert advice. Can someone advise, please?

Your UEFI installation shoud typically consist of 4 partitions. It looks as if you have 2 redundant Recovery partitions and have no data or factory recovery partition on Disk 0.

It has been common for additional Recovery partitions to be created; this should cease to be so now MS puts it at the end in current new installs.

Check you have a functional Recovery Partition with

    Reagentc /info
    at an admin command prompt.
    It should report Enabled.

Further: if you can boot to Advanced Startup options it's working.

One way to determine which is current is to explore each in turn with a 3rd party partition manager and determine the date. The most recent is the current one.

That's kind of convenient as you can then use the partition manager e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard to tidy your disk.

There are also commands you can use to determine and set the recovery partition in use, which someone will probably post next: see:

    Run Reagentc /info

    Code:
    Windows RE location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition4\Recovery\WindowsRE

Disk 0 Partition 4 is the applicable Recovery partition in the above example output.

    DiskParInfo.bat

Run the above script and post the output.

Partition 5 is the Recovery partition you need.
Hopefully, @zbook will come to help you.

You have more than enough information above to
    a. determine the current recovery partition
    b. acquire a partition manager with which you can delete partitions you don't need and recover space as you wish.

Before proceeding with the latter, you should- and tenforums members recommend this be done routinely and regularly so you have a second chance should things go badly- create a disk image with e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external disk for mage files- of all Windows partitions.

Then, should you make a mistake, you have the means to save yourself and your Windows installation.

Thanks. I do have regular Macrium disk images.

I downloaded MiniTools. Partition 5 is the most recently used one.

    Run:

Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

    These are the partitions:

    1) Recovery (disabled)
    2) System
    3) Reserved
    4) Primary
    5) Recovery (enabled)
    6) Recovery (disabled)
    7) Recovery (disabled)
    8) Recovery (disabled)

BIOS: UEFI with drive: GPT can have 128 partitions.
The first partition is 529 MB and during Windows upgrades it was insufficient in size.
    .
During Windows upgrades if the recovery partition was too small Windows would create an additional partition with a new recovery partition.
This was changed with newer Windows versions only when there was a clean install.
Later it was changed so that a clean install was no longer required.
Now the size of the windows and recovery partitions are supposed to be dynamic during the upgrade.
If the recovery partition is immediately to the right of the primary partition it can expand while the primary partition contracts.

For these steps there will be 2 recovery partitions.
The first partition can remain an unused recovery partition or unallocated space.

If the results from tuneup.bat display an unremarkable scannow results then proceed with these steps:

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    reagentc /disable

Use partition software to delete partitions 6, 7, and 8 making additional unallocated space.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    reagentc /enable

    Then run the script: diskparinfo.bat
