If you look at your Update History, which update or updates preceded this problem?
    Have you tried uninstall it/them?

I'd probably opt to disable all non-MS extensions and perform a clean boot to see if there's any chance of this not happening. If not, then work backwards.

If you can't reach a point where it doesn't happen, working thru 1 by 1 won't help.

    Similarly with Safe Mode.

If no joy with either of those, Autoruns (free from MS) can reveal additional startup items and extensions- sometimes even in Safe Mode.

Your PC seems to be from around 2019, so is relatively new.

There is, for example, a BIOS update dated Dec '20.

Have you run Lenovo System Update recently?
The laptop is fully updated from Lenovo site.
Problem started just after updating to build 804 (whatever was the KB). That happened after a Repair to overcome the problem of not being able to install KB4598242 (many posts and discussions on this problem from many people in this site.

As the problem with Windows Explorer does not happen all the time. I have to wait 1-2 days everytime to check if it is really resolved or not.
That is why Safe Mode or Clean Boot are not reliable indicators in this case.

I have accumulated 24 hrs with no crash so far (after uninstalling 7-Zip). Will wait for another 24 hrs, before declaring victory. Hope dies last...

Have you tried running sfc /scannow
    And... Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    Repeatedly. All reported good.

    Thank you for your reply.

You have to start somewhere and identify a base from which to work. Without an analytical approach random failures at longer intervals are hard to determine as you know.

Of course you might try uninstalling the update that led to this.

    - you can determine that using the build number and searching threads in the News section here, or check by date the update was installed e.g. in the Control Panel list.

So it looks like it was 7-Zip related. Since uninstalling it, there is no occurence.
I will re-install the latest version (7-Zip 21.00 alpha (2021-01-19)) and see what happens.
