Will upgrading memory from 8gb to 16gb help with slow PC and internet?

First post. So I have done a clean install windows 10 home, after formatting, new partition, updated drivers, etc... PC still seems to run slow and I am wondering if it is just an old (2014) mb, processor, etc.. Please take a look at my specs page for build info. OR, would upgrading from 8gb to 16gb memory help?

    Great site!

    Thanks

Additional memory may not improve the computer speed but it certainly can with running programs. The Internet speed is pretty much controlled by your ISP/Internet Service Provider but the connection from the computer to the Modem or Router may be at issue, depends upon what your Network hardware is.

Hi, please could you illustrate what you mean by 'slow', and by comparison, when did this PC last run 'fast' or acceptably?
For example, was that with a different build of Win 10?

In general, more RAM can help, but as to whether it will in your case depends on what is actually happening.

Please log in, wait a couple of minutes, then post a screenshot of your task manager, Processes tab thus:

You are hoping to see minimal resource usage (CPU, DISK).

    updated drivers,
I hope you didn't use a driver updater tool.
Normally there's no need to specifically do this. I've seen far more cases where an updated driver has caused problems, and an older one has to be used. I'd struggle to think of anyone achieving better performance by updating drivers.

The driver updates were done from the vendor website. But I ran the speedtest immediately after reloading windows 10, no updates to anything.

It has been running slow since the upgrade to windows 10, about 6 months ago. To be honest, not sure who did the upgrade in our house. But, it has been getting slower and slower since August/September timeframe.

The pc is directly connected to the xfinity router; I changed ports on the router, no help. I can do a speed test (speedtest.net) and get anywhere from 35 to 265Mbps on a 16-20ms ping. When I do the same speed test from my other pc that goes through 2 switches, it shows 375-610Mbps. Heck, I just did the test from my cell phone (apple 6s) and get 475Mbps. Every other wifi connected device shows about the same, if not more/faster.

I hope this helps as I don't really want to rebuild a pc, as I have probably built about 15 from our house and friends. The only PC's I have every purchased already built was my Commodore 64, and Apple IIc.
    TIA!!

Some more screen shots sorted by highest memory and cpu usage. Again, thanks very much!

What sort of HD have you got if its a spinner fitting an SSD will make a massive difference

In Device Manager, on the Advanced tab for the onboard Realtek RTL8111E Gigabit Ethernet controller, have you tried setting Interrupt Moderation to Disabled? Doing this might slow down the CPU in situations when the network traffic is excessive, but should help to improve the throughput of the network controller.

When you say you downloaded drivers from the manufacturer, do you mean you are already using the latest driver from Realtek, or did you download an older version that's from the manufacturer of the motherboard? If it's the latter choice, then try the Win10 Auto Installation Program from here:

Doesn't look as if RAM will be a major issue.
Is there any other way in which it seems slow?

It could be of passing interest to get your WEI score just as a rough guide:
Get Windows Experience Index (WEI) Score in Windows 10

or the summary score more readily via this great free well documented tweak tool from a good site:

Just to chime in that the actual WAN gateway or AP may need to be restarted, sometimes when there are changes to the network, the AP/gateway may conk out in a not so graceful manner.

I doubt that any HW changes to your actual PC will in any way improve the WAN speed, but like it was said it will improve running programs.

Also, you can get Linux on a USB and boot from it in live mode (i.e. not installed to HDD but running from USB). This will let you try how things behave on that side, (after the WAN gateway/AP restart.)

Also speedtest Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test its a reliable way to find out if you getting what your ISP says you're getting speed wise.

And dont forget, The WAN AP or gateway restarting, turning it off for 30 seconds/1minute and restarting it, it works to clear gremlins out of this.

I would be further interested in finding out what WAN gateway/AP you have, if its shared with other apartments, the model/brand and what firmware its running.

If you need any help with any of the things I said, feel free to ask, but you'll find searching the web will likely provide similar answers.

    Good luck.

Basically it won't make any difference to the Internet or the vast majority of PC applications.
However I would still upgrade to 16 GB if the price of memory modules is on a low. So you would not have to worry for however long the PC lasts for.

Looking at your specs, a 120 GB drive is much too small it maybe almost full which slows things up.
I would upgrade that to at least 512 GB.
You need a minimum of 20% free space on an HDD/SSD for temporary files, working room for updates and so on.
Installed applications will increase in size over the years, maybe doubling every 3 years.
