Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging

    Hello!

I've started experiencing mouse lag and extremely slow copying/moving/deleting files, and even when uploading to the cloud. It's intermitent. Sometimes the lagging comes on independently to copying files. I've also recently been experiencing blue screen crash (although this precedes the lagging) I believe there was a 'bad pool header' error message.

I have done the automatic updating of drivers in the device manager, everything seemed fine. I've previously experienced blue screen crash due to malware, so I did lots of malware scans using various apps. I ran a scan to on my drives to spot any issues.. But it persists. Is there particular drivers that could be responsible for this?

If anyone could be so kind as to shed some light and point me in the right direction that would be most appreciated!

    thanks :)

Hi, BSOD's are handled in a specialised section where you use a tool to create a set of reports.

Sadly you missed this important info:
    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-win-10-version.png

Do you see the same in Safe Mode?
If you perform a clean boot? (Google or see tutorial if unsure how).

    I've started experiencing mouse lag
Did you receive an update or upgrade before this happened? (Check your Update History around when this was).

Post a screenshot of your task manager thus:
    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-screenshot-.png
    a. When your PC is nominally idle
    b. When slow copying is occurring

Post a screenshot similar to this whilst copying a large file:

How many different items of security software dow you have installed at present?

    Hello,

Thanks very much for your response. I have listed my windows version. It's Windows 10 version 1909.

I'm not 100% clear what you mean when you say:

'Do you see the same in Safe Mode?
If you perform a clean boot? (Google or see tutorial if unsure how).'

Do you mean if I experience the same lag when I copy a file in safe mode? If this is what you mean I'll give it a go.

I think I begun experiencing the lag issue 5 days ago, maybe more, there doesn't see to be an update that coincides with this:

This is what the task manager looks like when idle:

    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-taskmanager_idle.jpg

This is what it looks like when transfering a large file (an image sequence with 680 jpgs in this case).

It took a very long time for Windows to 'discover' the items before they strated copying. Much longer than normal.

I have Malware bytes, Rogue Killer & AVG installed at present.

    Many thanks for your help!

Since you mentioned BSODs, it'd probably be better to start a thread in that forum section and post the needed logs for analysis. There are instructions at the top. Still...

Are all of these running in the background?! This is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of computer resources and might even be causing issues. AVG alone should be enough (although in my personal opinion, windows defender is all a user needs and does quite fine).

For testing purposes, I'd suggest to uninstall them all.

    Agreed.

As in normal mode you have a problem we need to change the scenario.

    a. Boot to Safe Mode. Repeat transfer test. Compare speed.
    b. Perform a clean boot. Repeat transfer test. Compare speed.

I was trying to save myself a little typing.

I keep wondering why people find it hard to provide their build number.
Please see how above. It looks like 1909 with KB4023057 whatever that works out as. Thanks.

It took a very long time for Windows to 'discover' the items before they strated copying. Much longer than normal.
Not a folder full of files, a single large file please.

Otherwise you are seeing something quite different.

Note how I show the speed in the explorer dialogue as well in my screenshot.

If you really are copying anything, your disk is doing virtually nothing.

How many disks do you have installed? What type are they?

    Please install and run
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - the best instant commentary right on its GUI by far. (SSDs too).
Post a screenshot of its GUI per disk.

    Hi,

Thanks for your response. I've posted in the BSOD dedicated forum with a log from the V2 log collector.

I don't normally have those 3 anti virus running at the same time. I have unstalled them for now.

    Thanks

Ok, you should still perform the disk tests and check the transfer rate with a large file.

I suspect you may find your disk transfer rate is very limited.

    Hi,

My Windows 10 version is 1909 (PS Build 18363.1198)

I uninstalled all my antivirus software. I'm unable to replicate the issue now. I'm copying a 1GB file across different directories and drives & it's extremely fast. The dialogue box doesn't appear long enough for me to be able to screen shot it.

The mouse lagging was persisting. I swapped mouse and it turns the mouse was the issue. Strange thing is the lagging would coincide with copying/uploading files.. So not sure what happened there.

I did download hard disk sentinel and this is the GUI for each of my drives:

C drive (500gb SSD) with Windows installation and most software:

    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-cdrive_01.jpg

    3 terabyte HDD:

    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-zdrive_01.jpg

    2 terabyte HDD:

    Windows 10 moving/deleting files extremely slow & mouse lagging-odrive_01.jpg

    Many thanks

Good thing it was that simple. Now you're aware of some approaches you could use in a future situation.
