DELL Laptop “System Files” storage is very large

Windows 10 Home, 20H2, build 19042.630 on DELL Inspiron 15-3576 laptop.

I believe that the average storage space used by Windows “System Files” is around 20 GB but on my DELL laptop it is 34.3 GB.

I believe DELL installs a specialised version of Windows in their laptops but could this amount to an extra 14.3 GB?

I am referring to the OS files here, not storage used by apps, and there are no restore points saved since ‘System Recovery’ is turned OFF.

Does anyone know how to reduce the storage taken by “System Files”?

    Thank you.

Not quite sure what you mean by "System Files" - I assume you mean the size of the Windows Folder.
34.3 GB is perfectly normal. It is 38.7 GB on my Laptop.

Using the new Storage indicators in Settings says System Files are 32.5 GB.
Each total is probably adding up slightly different things.

No idea where you get those ideas of an average of 20 GB, is not true now.

It is a standard version of Windows 10.
Dell may add a few system drivers for their hardware, but so do all Laptop manufacturers. Very small in size, no worries.

Thanks for the reply - I think the 20 GB figure is something I have noticed “here and there” on the internet so I could have got the wrong idea.

No, I do not mean the size of the Windows folder and, yes, I am referring to the storage figures given in the settings/system/storage area.

If I click on “System & Reserved” in this window I then see more details including “System Files”.

On my DELL this is 34.3 GB and (I forgot to mention this next bit until now) on my other (non-DELL) desktop PC running the same Windows version the “System Files” storage is only 14.9 GB. A massive 20 GB increase.

This begs the question “What the heck are DELL installing in their laptops?”

Due to the 34.3 GB being “System Files” I would not have thought I could reduce the amount of disk space used but I wondered if anyone had other ideas.

These images are wrong and I can't delete them so I'll try again tomorrow.

I do user support on the Dell Community forums.
A misconception that's been around for ages. The Windows OS installed by Dell is a standard OEM OS, nothing added.
There is additional support software installed such as the Dell Support Assistant, but that is not part of the OS.

I'll try to upload photos again: -

DELL is the top picture and my desktop is the other.

Not really because mine is a Toshiba laptop and System Files are 32.5 GB.

You'll have to ask Microsoft as to what is included in those categories.

Yes, I think I will just have to accept that the DELL system files are larger than my other PC. It is what it is and that's it.

Thanks for all replies. I'll call this solved.

I see the same big difference between my Dells and other computers.

Dell do allow old driver & utility updates to accumulate in
    C:\ProgramData\Dell\drivers
    They can all be deleted.

The additional display card [nVidia in my case] is responsible for quite a bit of used space.

There are other accumulations that I have never resolved.
I keep my own files on a separate disk. I use Clean disk regularly. I have not installed any new applications for years.
On my Dell, the OS & applications disk has swollen from about 30GB to 60GB for no reason that I know of.

Treesize [free] can help you see where space is being used. Before running it, set File explorer to display hidden & system files because its settings affect Treesize as well. Then turn off displaying hidden & system files afterwards as it's normally a distraction.
