    Windows 10 Idle RAM Usage

    Windows 10 Idle RAM Usage-untitled.png

I'm wondering if my idle ram is normal for Windows 10. It's using about 1.2-1.5GB on idle without any programs running.

On Windows 8 it my idle usage was 900MB - 1.1GB with no programs running and with all the same programs installed.

So is that a normal amount for windows 10? Does W10 just utilise more ram?

How much memory is windows 10 using for you?

My system uses around 1.6 GB while at idle.

o.0 Guessing you have some programs installed that have background processes?

That seems high for just being idle otherwise. What was it normally when you were on windows 7/8?

Mine's about 1.7 GB, but I do have more services and tasks that are required on start up since it's a mobile tablet with pen and touch, WiFi, Bluetooth etc.

    I see nothing wrong.

One thing that needs to be understood is that 1.6 GB is by no means a fixed quantity. It might seem high now but that is only because there is no better use for the memory. Windows will always try to find some use for as much memory as possible, even if it is only of trivial value. Memory was intended to be used, not sit idle. But do not be concerned. If a large application is started that usage will automatically be trimmed back to meet the demand, drastically if necessary.

Idle memory usage depends on many factors, including how much memory you have.

Yeah I know about all that it's just... I wonder why it's using so much more than Windows 8. I mean I guess it's a good thing. And nothing seems out of the ordinary in the processes.

I don't love that the cortana process is always running even when you disable cortana but I guess it's not hurting anything. Must have other secondary uses or some important windows 10 specific services must rely on it.

I'm mostly wondering what usage other people are getting.

I had more default services started up on 10 than 8.1, it's the cortana + some other background tasks and windows processes that added up my RAM use. I used about 1.4 GB of RAM at idle when I had 8.1

As I said before, memory usage in Window is highly variable. The simplistic comparisons presented here mean nothing, in fact they are more misleading than anything else.

I suppose it doesn't but I was just curious.
