New laptop, only 4G RAM, slow -- How to improve Performance

I bought a new Dell laptop which was preloaded with Windows 10. It runs terribly slowerly. I called Dell and they said I should have bought more RAM. I said why didn't the ad SAY this is an insufficient amount of RAM to run Windows 10? I would not have bought the machine since each add-on is more expensive than buying what you wanted in the first place. GRRR.

    The laptop model:

    Inspiron 15 3582 BTX

Any ideas as to how to make this piece of crap faster would be much appreciated.

I am angry with Dell for selling customers a laptop that can't handle the piggy demands of Windows 10 -- and it's not like we have any other choice. Double GRRR.

    Hello sethian,

With only 4GB of RAM, the main thing to help performance is not having much running at the same time and in the background.

You can also pick and choose items you want in the tutorial below to help improve performance.

Should be okay with day-to-day tasks. But 4GB in today's standards is considered low. 8GB should be your minimum.

Could non-optimized performance explain webcamming problem I am having

I do not run anything at the time I run video conferencing software -- but no matter which software I run (Skype, Zoom, doxxme, UHN proprietary), I get video/audio drop-outs on both ends, unstable connection messages (even though my desktop computer right beside the laptop, getting the same Wifi has no connection problems).

Dell Canada, the manufacturer, reps have done all remote-assisted tests they could, found nothing in hardware, and computer was earlier reset by them, and drivers updated.

Dell is saying it is sofware-related . . . but how can it be that four different software platforms are all not working?!

I have been trying to get this (new) laptop working for webcamming but it's still glitchy and unreliable -- and during covid, I would REALLY like to be able to do video conferencing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

@sethian, Hello. Filling out the laptop details in your profile would be most helpful. Does it have a SSD boot drive? As @RoasterMen mentioned - 8+ GB of RAM would be best. Do you have an option to return the laptop at this point? I'd look into the cost to increase RAM amount too.

Does it have SSD or old fashioned Hard Disk Drive?

    Good ideas, thanks

Still under its first-year warranty until this December.

When I bought this laptop, I wanted to buy a solution not a problem. I would have paid more when I was buying a laptop for 4GB of RAM had I known that the Windows 10 OS is such a resource-hog that 4GB is insufficient.

Again, I think Dell is giving itself a bad name -- don't sell a laptop that can barely run its OS, let alone more on top of that.

If they'd been honest, they would have said, "Here's our cheapest laptop but it doesn't work well; or you can spend $40 more for 4GB RAM and get one that doesn't take 15 seconds to open a Windows Explorer window!"

Dell will claim they can't anticipate how the customer is going to load/use the laptop. You didn't have these issues when you first received it?

I think you will find that RAM is not the bottleneck with that computer. It's only got an Intel N4000 or Intel Pentium N5000 processor. That's your bottleneck.
