    SSD optimize

I know this has been beaten to death.
The answer seems to depend upon the person answering.
I cannot figure out whether I should turn windows on or off and if on, for what frequency a month or a week.
Thee is a lot of Google gossip that all SSDs should not be optimized then everyone jumps in with long explanations about trim etc.

Please reply only if you are qualified and are absolutely sure.

Do you optimize and if so or what frequency, month or week?

Edit: Fixed a typo that changes meaning of a sentence. Changed the "rerelease" to "prerelease"

maranna, your question is a little vague. You ask whether you should turn Windows on or off. Is that what you meant to ask or are you asking about turning optimization of the SSD on or off?

I'm assuming the later, so that is what I am responding to.

Unless you have a very specific reason to do otherwise, I would suggest simply allowing Windows to use default settings for optimization. Optimization is designed with intelligent defaults and is SSD aware, modifying behavior specifically for SSDs to minimize impacts on an SSD.

You may have seen discussion about an optimization issue that is currently present, but a fix for this is going to be released very soon (already fixed in the prerelease of Windows 20H2).

You may hear varied opinions on this, but I'm coming from 10 years of Microsoft Technical Support and 12 years with a major storage vendor so I do like to think that I have a little bit of experience with this.

To add to what hsehestedt said. back when I got involved with building computers [late '94] it was important to defrag drives to maximize space available and somewhat improve performance by keeping parts of a file close to each other. Over the years performance has improved quite a bit and customizing defrag is not as necessary, let Windows do its thing.

There is an impending fix to the SSD "issue" with Windows 10 2004. For right now turned it off and manuals trim weekly/monthly whatever you wish. The fix has been impediment in Release Preview and works and will be forthcoming to RTM very shortyly.

That is the simple straight forward answer without going into hundreds of threads on SSD, Do or Not and When.

Windows' own 'Defrag and Optimise drives' will defrag an HDD or Trim an SSD, as appropriate. No, you shouldn't defrag an SSD, but Windows won't do that, even if you ask it to optimise an SSD. It will Trim it instead. This post from @Try3 has more details.

You are right that I was referring to turning optimization on or off not windows.
I was curious how optimization was set up when you do a clean install or the regular default for windows 10 not so much what opinions are. What does windows say is the default, “ on or off”?
I am not trying to be rude I just want to know the default optimization setting.

Best of my knowledge default is ON, Scheduled for Monthly run. Trim for SSD, Defrag for HDD. All visible drives/partitions. That can all be user modified.

    You're not rude.... I understand....

Thank you Tomcat, very much. I appreciate your courtesy . I think I will leave it off until I hear otherwise in a week or so, then act accordingly.

Good choice. Deep down in the fixes that went to Release Preview is this:

We fixed an issue that causes the Optimize Drives dialog to incorrectly report that previously optimized drives need to be optimized again.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Beta Channel Build 19042.487 (20H2) Aug. 26

All of these fixes will be coming to RTM Public very soon.
