I just went through the same issues as discussed here but they were not related to a failed update. I had no luck with DISM trying to access install.esd on a USB Media Creation Tool. I even tried copying the esd file to a local drive but no luck as well. What did work for me was downloading the correct Win10 ISO, mounting it, and then copying install.wim to a local drive. It probably would have worked had a just burned the ISO to a DVD but why waste a DVD. There must be something that DISM doesn't like about the install.esd file.

I'm not certain, but I believe the files in the Media Creation Tool are compressed which will, in some cases, cause DISM to fail. If you download a standard ISO, the files are not compressed and DISM will work.

In light of my experience you are absolutely right. I was getting ready to throw my PC out the window (that may be a pun) before I tried the ISO. So relieved to be past this hurdle.
