    Extremely Slow Startup

Dell Inspiron 5759 16 gigs of RAM - plenty of disk space - start up takes 5-10 minutes

I have completed all the normal stuff - updates, system file checker DISM, and anything I have read or heard of

Both the system file checker and DISM says everything with the OS is good

The only thing I haven't tried is to do a Windows reset - does it make sense to do that?

    Doesn't make sense yet.

"Normal stuff"......what have you noticed in Task Manager regarding processes, memory usage, startup items, disk activity?

    Have you run msconfig?

Have you tried a clean boot?

    Update

Once it is up, everything in the task manager looks normal - I've disabled everything I do not need on startup in msconfig

Have not tried a clean book

BTW forgot to mention I have also run two different virus programs - both say nothing found

You can uncheck everything in startup for a test run or two to see if it helps. Even anti-virus.

There are tools that can provide a log of what goes on during your boot process---what's taking up the time---but I'm not familiar with their operation. Others here are.

    Do try the clean boot.

I'd at least think about testing RAM and hard disk to eliminate hardware issues.

Has it always been slow? If not, what may have occurred around the time it went haywire? Config changes, new hardware, new Windows updates, etc?

Probably worthwhile to try an older System Restore point----if you have any available. And a good time to consider an imaging application.

Thanks for your time and patience

I will try what you suggested - back to my original question - do you think I should try 'reset' under recovery

I've never done a reset or a repair install. I instead have relied on System Restore or imaging.

I can't say that either would help or hurt you. I have zero personal experience.

As I understand it, a repair install keeps all programs, data and most settings.

A reset apparently loses all settings and apps and is akin to a clean install.

One thing that can cause this is a hard disk controller set to ATA or IDE instead of AHCI. Start Device Manager, expand "IDE/ATA Controllers" and see if this is the case.
