First things first. ALWAYS choose the exact same "server" when running speed tests. There should be an option to... "change server", before you start the speed test.
Different servers will, at any given time, have different amounts of "congestion" on their end. You ran all the tests at the same time, and that's good. Now, run them again on the same server, and you'll have some usable data to work with.
That speed test really has nothing to do with browsing. Browsing is based of mostly hardware....faster hardware equals faster browsing. This is directly due to the transfer of data from with in the system hardware.
X(your computer)........A.....B......C......D (server with web page)
X can only gain the webpage at the lowest speed computer between you and the page.
the more hops you have to make slows it down.
Speed tests are relative to how many hops you have to make to the test.
If there is just one hop the page will load quickly or as fast as either your
computer or the others speed.
Thanks for your reply thomaseg1 but my ancient brain still can't see why there are wide differences in speed with different Browsers on the same PC from the same Test Server. I realise it is a low spec Pc but surely if that were the cause all browsers would give fairly similar results.
You are only considering numbers displayed in your Web Browsers, or an App that is well known to display silly results.
Those numbers are the result of a long path from the server, where you have no control over a lot of variables like:
Speedtest server capacity, Traffic management over each of those hops as mentioned in post #6, Congestion on those hops, time variations in almost all of them even if that is only minutes difference in taking readings.
In addition, all your Web browsers are subject to various settings, pre-emptive/predictive downloading, and caching. That varies with each Web browser depending on your settings and what they let you fiddle with.
4 GB of RAM is rather minimal these days and you have installed 2 extra Web Browsers, settings and how you use them unknown.
Thank you for your answer Helmut, I get that different Browsers will give different results depending on settings etc. I was just hoping for suggestions as to what could be the main settings problems for such a difference.
As for the extra Browsers I prefer to use FF and installed that first as I don't go much on Edge, I only added Chrome as a comparison for the Speedtest I have not used it for anything othe than the Speedtests and not touched any settings in it.
Plankton It's a LAN connection, I dread to think what the result would be via WiFi
