Windows 10 self maintenance?
Is there a (scheduled) process which Windows uses to clean up its system? And what is the criteria that activates this process?

Try Nirsoft's Taskscheduler view (free) - search for e.g.
maint
&
clean
and you will find some tasks you can explore.
You can then find those and see more in Windows task scheduler.

Much obliged. I posted this only because my search engines have given up from overuse on topics relating to saving time on maintenance.

There are several cleanup tasks, not sure if they are all dependant on the scheduled maintenance.
Like you have storage sense cleanup, component and device cleanup, disk defrag and a few others.
