Various Sleep / ModernStandby Issues, Related to Battery Drain

Sleep and Modern Standby Issue, common to Windows 10 laptops by Lenovo / HP / Dell / Microsoft; also directly relating to a massive battery drain.

See the diagram below for a diagrammatic explanation of the problem. I'm at the end of my wits. Lenovo are useless for troubleshooting. By some miracle, I already had them replace the laptop; the previous one was doing the same thing (although the inclusion of a Thunderbolt 3 dock is a new factor, the same symptoms are observed periodically without the dock involved...) Please can anyone help?

    Windows 10 version 1909 (OS Build 18363.959)

    Hi Mike

As you've collected all the images into one thing I can read any of it. If if I try to zoom.

Could you post each of the screen grabs as individual shots.

Not saying I can fix but I can't even begin as I can't read.

I've split the image up into 2, and uploaded them with really good resolution. At least in Edge, I'm able to click on these images and zoom in, after I post them.

    If you run this comamnd
    Code:
    powercfg -a
you will see that your computer does not support normal sleep [S3 Sleep].
    - Your attempt to send it to sleep only sends it to "ModernStandby", which is a mileadingly named state that ought to be called "ModernIdle", and the computer was going to do that anyway so your Power options achieve nothing.
    - You only really have a choice of on/hibernate/off.

Even a computer that attempts to be power-efficient drains it battery on idle [whether it's an older computer with conventional power states or a new one with 'ModernStandby']. It does not drain quite as fast as it does in use yet with the display off but there is not much in it.

As for your comment about network connections, the powercfg -a command will tell you what its current setting really is. You can alter that in
Enable or Disable Network Connectivity in Modern Standby - TenForumsTutorials

In short, 'ModernStandby' is not the dog's bollocks. It is merely bollocks.

OK so deactivate "Sleep" as an option, and always use hibernate? - - for lid Close, or Power Button press.

If that works, great, and I'll never see this problem recur. Why did none of the timings work though? Why did it go to hibernate at 90 min instead of 120min; then why did it stay in Modern Standby (Sleep) for 18h instead of eventually hibernating? I feel like the sleep (Modern Standby) mode would be acceptable if it just did as it has been setup to do: Hibernate after a short period in Modern Standby.

It's insane that such a standard Windows feature (Sleep) is mucking up this computer and so many others... It's not like a hidden feature, activated through a registry edit...

The connected standby is indeed disabled by way of that setting I showed (in line with Option 1 in the tutorial link you shared). I only question it because something turned the laptop back on after it turned off, at just after 1AM, then put it into Modern Standby moments later.

You did not post your powercfg -a results but if S3 Sleep does not exist on your computer then you cannot use it and so you might as well remove it from Power options [Choose what the buttons do, Power plan timings].

Try them out again once you have removed references to Sleep.

I find everything to do with ModernStandby insane. The loss of S3 [Sleep] is a disaster.

    Look in Event Viewer
    Log - System
    Sources - Kernel-power, Power-Troubleshooter
    EventIDs - 1, 42
You can just import the attached xml Custom view definition to make it easy [I zipped it up to post it]. On the right-hand side of Event viewer's window, click on Import Custom view.
    Power - Sleep-Hibernate transitions.zip
It might well be the TS task that runs USOClient.exe [part of the Windows update mechanism].

By the way, a single wake event can also be seen using this command
    Code:
    PowerCfg -LastWake
but the event is lost when the next wake occurs so I always use Event viewer instead.

Here we are, and indeed: No S3 Sleep support. However, the "Network Connected" status is shocking... I mean, you can see it in my previous posts with the screengrabs: The setting is set to Always disable network connectivity...
    Code:
The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected
        Hibernate
        Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
        Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

        Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

        Standby (S3)
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

        Hybrid Sleep
            Standby (S3) is not available.
Event viewer log: Further troubling results... There are no logs for the day we were looking at.

Seems to just be the time-out, properly suspending to sleep. This is not reflected in the previous day, which generated the sleep-report logs at the start of this thread

    Mike,

I do not know why you are not getting events recorded when they seem to have taken place.

Perhaps, if you wait, Ken will chip in after he has resumed from sleep.
