    Faster shutdown

    Hi,

My PC is very slow on shutdown and I knew the reason it is my external drive connected to usb port, I think it take time waiting to disconnet from it first so is there a way to force disconnect from my external drive on restart or shutdown ?

How did you determine it was the external USB drive?

If I removed the external drive then no more slow shutdown.

Do you have indexing turned on for that drive?

When you go to Device Manager (right-click on the Start icon, and select it from the list), right click on that drive entry, click Properties, and select the Policy tab, is it set for Quick Removal, or Better Perfomance?

all the partitions are not indexed , only one is indexed. Quick removal is selected.

    Also try fast shutdown tweaks.

    Step 13 here:

    Optimize Performance of Windows 10

    Script here:

Event Viewer Service causing Shutdown/Restart slowdown.

See what files are opened on the drive:

    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html

See what is locking the drive:

LockHunter is a free 64/32 bit tool to delete files blocked by any processes

Turn off AV scanning for the drive.

    "only one is indexed"

Simplest thing to try first is turn off indexing and test.

These tweaks have sped up shutdown speed since as far back as Windows XP ...

    Other option to consider:

If possible move everything off the drive and format it. Disconnect the drive and reboot.

Connect the drive then shutdown (without moving any files onto the drive).

See if you get the same problem.
