I might have reported this before and if I have, just pretend I haven't. This morning, I find this laptop left on sleep but with the fans screaming wide open. This happens every few weeks. It can't be brought out of sleep and the only way it can be stopped is holding down on the Power button.
I had similar symptoms a couple of years ago with the PC I had then. The PC was less than one year old when those symptoms started. Those same symptoms continued on and off for a few months--until the day finally came when my PC wouldn't boot at all. The motherboard was gone and needed to be replaced. It must have been defective from day one.

At least on the PCs that I've owned, the fans always start up at full speed at the moment that the PC first starts to boot or wake up. Then the BIOS (or perhaps some third-party software) takes over fan control from then on and the fans slow down. The reason that your PC's fans are running at full blast is just that your PC froze while trying to wake up.

I strongly suggest you do a full backup and make regular backups frequently from now on.

You could check the Event Viewer to see if some funky events occurred while your PC was supposedly asleep, or when your PC tried to wake up for some reason. But I bet you won't find anything--because I bet it's a problem with the motherboard or the CPU.

I concur, that the laptop could be ready to explode & burst into a ball of flame! It's done that off and on (not often) for a couple years. I'll wake up in the middle of the night and it sounds like a huge fan is whirling & it's this computer.
I've got it fixed so that nothing can wake up the computer now when it's asleep. I also have everything backup up and keep things backed up, for there's nothing that brings greater joy than a laptop on the desk that is nothing more than a gob of white slag & melted plastic & nothing backed up.
Would you agree that a 7 year old laptop that is used constantly has given me more than what I've asked for? In other words, would you agree that it owes me nothing now?

I thought I should add this, that the Event Viewer shows a continual array of Bonjour errors. I've therefore uninstalled the thing!
