DsmSvc Windows Service eating 10% CPU all the time

    DsmSvc Windows Service eating 10% CPU all the time

    It's always hovering around 9-10%. "Enables the detection, download and installation of device-related software. If this service is disabled, devices may be configured with outdated software, and may not work correctly."
    Says its the Device Setup Manager. It doesn't sound like something that should be eating 10% of system resources at all times. Maybe I only need the service on when I install new hardware, is that correct? Could someone please let me know what the problem might be?

    UPDATE: I am able to terminate the process permanently and enable it whenever I want. Is this the way to go?

    Hi, presumably you've looked through these: could be something helpful. Not an issue I've noted here myself.

    There's nothing about this on threads here, so basic analysis or research for simialr cases required. I assume you have troubled to look as suggested.

    You say nothing about your PC, what it is or how old it is, nor have you stated your Windows build number as you were prompted to do when you wrote the post.

    History: (so often omitted by posters):

    When did this start?
    What happened before it started?
    Do you have a disk image you can use to revert to a point before it started?

    Yeah, I looked around. Says it could be a driver issue and so I started in safe mode to see and the service isn't even started, so I can't tell if it is a driver issue or not.

    See amended post above. Please provide PC Specs.

    Look at your Update History- the drivers section at the end. Is there evidence of repeated update attempts?

    Have you recently applied a feature update? (Something that might trigger this?) Changed hardware?


    Look at your Device Manager- any problems indicated?

    Might be failing to connect- are you using a proxy or a VPN, or blocked internet access in any way?

    I always put my windows version on here, I'm not sure if I was prompted to do so this time. It's the May 2020 update and I have a 9900K with 1080ti. I'm at work so let me get back to you.
