Disk check stuck at total 99%

I have a laptop (Dell Latitude E6430) with an internal 1TB disk with some bad sectors on it (planning to replace it soon, data backed up)..
When I switched on the laptop now, it asked for a disk check on that drive and the check ran for about an hour.. right now its stuck for more than half an hour at

    "Fixing (D:) Stage 3: 100% (3of 3); Total: 99%; ETA: 0:00:00 ..."

Can I do a restart or should I wait for some more time?

I suspect that it has actually completed Stage 3 (verifying security descriptors) successfully. It may have decided to start Stage 4. If so, it's busy doing other things and hasn't had a chance to update the display yet.

Stage 4 is 'verifying file data' and with your known bad sectors would inevitably take a long time.

Do you see any disk activity? Is the disk LED lit or flashing? If so I expect it to (eventually) get round to saying it has finished.

If there's no disk activity, then the point of failure may be writing the chkdsk log to your HDD. A chkdsk at boot writes a log to the System Volume Information folder when it completes. It may have hit one of your bad blocks and is still trying to write the log.

If there is no disk activity then it should be relatively safe to power down.

Interrupting chkdsk is not recommended. However, canceling or interrupting chkdsk should not leave the volume any more corrupt than it was before chkdsk was run.

The risk is data loss / corruption when interrupting chkdsk.
With data backed up there is flexibility.
Unfortunately nobody can predict the outcome.

The disk check finally completed after an hour..

Only problem is the boot time is quite long (almost 5 mins) with the disk in the laptop.. if I remove the disk the boot time is quite fast..
Anyway.. time to replace the disk
