Ah, I just did a google search and landed on this particular forum thread and joined to share my "eureka" moment - I should have searched more closely. :)

Funnily enough I have since reversed all the previous internet advice regarding superfetch, regedit settings et al, rebooted and guess what, apart from when I start a program the disc usage is still low - who'd have thunk it

Turning off Show me Windows Tips resolved high disk usage (95-100%) for me as well. Thanks so much - now I can keep what is left of my hair after pulling out most of it! GOOD SHOW.

Turning off notifications SOLVED the disk-usage issue for me! Thank you very much!

    To solve the issue:

    1. Right click the start bar -> Click "Properties"
    2. Click "Customize" next to 'Notification Area:'
    3. Slide all bars to "Off" in the 'Notifications' category
    4. Finished!

Before, I was sitting at 99% disk usage continuously even while idling! Now I am idling (with chrome running) at a much more reasonable 3% disk usage (using Windows 10 x64, Lenovo Y50 Laptop). Thanks again!

Man alive you saved me this has been bugging me for soooooo long i have built a monster pc , built loads in the past this is the only one with this issue , i7 4790k , gtx 980 yadda yadda but this has fixed it i would shake your had thanks so much

Wonder why some people have problems with this...? I have them on (default) - disk usage 0. Suggests some underlying trigger...

Did you get your problem solved?

I know I am late to the party but being driven NUTS by the same problem. Did you fix it? What did it for you?

Sorry to say I have NOT resolved this!

Months ago I was able to stop it using the suggestion to turn off Windows notification (which is posted above on this forum and elsewhere) but after Win 10 updated some months back it started up again. I have followed so many suggestions and links without resolution I finally stepped back and took a break from troubleshooting efforts.

The UPDATE is that sometimes it takes an estimated 15 mins. of idle time before the disk is flickering solid; other times it is more like 20-30 mins. before it starts up. As said prior, just touching the mousepad or keyboard makes it stop and not start again as long as I am using the laptop.

When I have been able to look at Task Manager's Processes tab the "System and Compressed Memory" is usually at top of list, I have changed Page File size along with stopping suggested Services and on and on...and here I sit without resolution. CPU usage can bounce up/down or sometimes peg at 100%. Disk usage fluctuates as well.

Of course Win 10 does self maintenance, disk indexing and other background functions that need time to complete. However, my take is this is none of that as the symptom will happen every day, all day if left On and idle and the case gets pretty warm as is output from the cooling fan,

So I am now closing the lid and putting the laptop to sleep as soon as I am done processing email, surfing, etc. In other words I am living with it and adapting without resolution. Lucky for me, waking the old Sony VAIO is quick and network connection is almost immediate.

Sooo,,,,if you or anyone else has suggestions or links I am open to hear from you. I am seriously considering doing a clean install of Win 7 Pro as it was prior to Win 10 'upgrade' but now just yet... Thanks for asking.

Thank you for your kind response. I have spent countless hours trying to figure it out and have
surrendered as well. I actually did a clean sweep and the problem returned. Windows? One of my "essential" programs? I quit.

Please see the various threads on this forum on "System and Compressed Memory" - simply search for that using the white search box above.

There's also a chance the imminent anniversary edition upgrade may improve things.. I've noted one other long standing issue resolved.

There's no single solution, and it can be hard to identify. Some have experienced this in conjunction with using the Chrome browser, for example.
