Your comment about USB devices rung a bell. A couple of months ago when I built this PC I had some (still unresolved) issues with the event log and an external drive bay card reader connected internally to a USB header on the motherboard. It was generating thousands of entries in the Applications and Services->Microsoft->Windows->StorDiag and StorPort logs. The only real way to stop the errors was to disable the disk devices shown in device manager. I've just done this again, rebooted, and the issue has gone away.
