Well I've done a repair install of Windows 10 v2004 and within a few minutes of booting it up, following the completion of the install, the search service is using 350MB of memory and rising constantly.

Hello @Blackbat,
Sort the CPU column for highest at the top and then post a screenshot of the whole screen [ maximised ], well as much as what is active . . .
Upload => How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums.
I hope this helps!
I have turned off Windows indexer.
I use Everything
I'm only using the Windows search service to index the start menu and Outlook.
OK - now we're getting somewhere.
Your comment about USB devices rung a bell. A couple of months ago when I built this PC I had some (still unresolved) issues with the event log and an external drive bay card reader connected internally to a USB header on the motherboard. It was generating thousands of entries in the Applications and Services->Microsoft->Windows->StorDiag and StorPort logs. The only real way to stop the errors was to disable the disk devices shown in device manager. I've just done this again, rebooted, and the issue has gone away.
FYI, the errors in the event logs are as follows:
Looks like I may need to source an alternative card reader (yes I know I could use an external one but I like an inbuilt one which in this case provides me with USB-C on the front of my enclosure as well)....
