Defragment & Optimize Drives Reports "Never run"

Since upgrading to Windows 10 2004, I have encountered an issue with the tool Defragment & Optimize Drives. First of all, let me state that I have a SSD and realize that defragmentation is not needed. However, I find it odd that the tool reports "Never run" and "Needs optimization."

I am able to run the tool and it appears to run the optimization command properly but upon reboot it returns to the above "Never run" and "Needs optimization" statements. Also, the "Analyze" button is never available (greyed out). None of this was an issue prior to the update. Thusfar, this is the only oddity I have discovered with the update. Has anyone else encountered this? Any suggestions on how to fix? I don't really want to uninstall the update over this one issue. Thanks in advance!

    • Addresses an issue that causes the Optimize Drives dialog to incorrectly report that previously optimized drives need to be optimized again.

Please note that this is an optional update - the stable release is expected on 8th September 2020.

    Hi,
I wanted to report that I still have the error Defrag id 264 (0x8900002A) despite not having SSD but only 4 HDDs and on all of them gives the same error.
I don't have kb4571744 among the updates installed and even downloading it doesn't allow me to install it.
    What can I do..
    Thanks

Defragging drives these days 100% waste of time - don't bother !!!

Agree with @jimbo45 on this. The OS takes care of defragging/trimming. Why mess with it.

If one chooses 'monthly' how often (or when) will it 'trim' the SSD drives? Reason I ask is my drives show 31 days since last retrim. I have is set to monthly.

Same here, monthly and it has been 41 days, this with 19042.630

Where/how do you check to see when trim was last done? My memory does not seem to have that knowledge any more

You are seeing this because M$ is stupid and keeps trying to trim HDDs - they introduced this bug with 2004. You know, for every enhancement this have to break things. And they have converted their users in to software testers.

I see the same errror from my HDDs because they have not fixed this bug which has been present for a long time now. Just ignore it for now. They are both defragging and trimming the HDD - you should still see that the defrag message was successful for HDDs.

"The storage optimizer couldn't complete retrim on DATA (D:) because: The operation requested is not supported by the hardware backing the volume. (0x8900002A)" D: in my case is a HDD.
