Storage Sense registry entries do not match info in win10 settings app

I am trying to create my own PowerShell script, which configure fresh Win10 installation according my own personal preferences. There are very good examples out there on Github, which I am using as pattern:

    GitHub - farag2/Windows-10-Setup-Script: Script to setup Windows 10 1903/1909
GitHub - Disassembler0/Win10-Initial-Setup-Script: PowerShell script for automation of routine tasks done after fresh installations of Windows 10 / Server 2016 / Server 2019

In particular, I am trying to configure Storage Sense settings via PowerShell script. On internet there are 3 ways described, which can be used to set-up Storage Sense:

    • Windows 10 Settings App
    • Using Group Policy
    • Using registry entries

What I noticed is, that changing the registry entries has no effect to information displayed in Windows 10 Settings app. The settings app displays its own information, which is stored somewhere else and is independent on the registry entries. Only, if the information in the settings app is changed, the change is reflected to the registry entries. However it doesn't work otherwise. Any change in the registry entries doesn't have effect on the information displayed in the settings app. Even restart of the PC doesn't update the displayed information in the settings app according the registry entries. I have tested this behaviour with all Storage Sense relevant entries.

This is a little bit annoying. Running such scripts leaves the user with no possibility to find out, which settings are really effective. Is there any possibility to script corresponding values in the Windows 10 settings app as well?

Hello jmys, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I just tested the setting on Windows 10 system, and they are still the same as per the tutorial below.

Turn On or Off Storage Sense Automatically Free Up Space in Windows 10

Just to verify, did you close Settings before applying the registry changes, and then reopen Settings to see the change?

Did you test using the .reg file from option 2 above?

OK. I was incorrect. I have not tested this behaviour with all Storage Sense relevant entries, but only two. They are:

    • Delete files in my recycle bin, if they have been there over (name '256' in the registry)
    • Delete files in my Downloads folder, if they have been there over (name '512' in the registry)

Changing those two values in the registry doesn't have any impact on the value displayed in the settings app. Your examples in the tutorial do not tackle those two options. Closing and ropening the app do not have effect.

Nar, the tutorial is just for the on/off and "Run Storage sense" settings instead.

I have tried those and the change appeared ASAP, I went back and then to Configure Storage Spaces.

I used policies, I do not know, what scripts you tried, I do not know how to open scripts on github, lol.
