    100% disc usage solved

Just in case this may help anyone...

I had a problem with my old desktop (HP Envy 23, running Windows 10, Ver 1903, build 18367.778) becoming very slow due to constant hard disc activity, up to 100% if I even opened an email.

I tried all of the solutions referred to in the tutorials, mostly with no success. However, the one that does seem to have sorted it is changing the page file size. It was set to automatic in my system, so I changed to custom, with the lower figure as the size of my RAM (6 GBq) and the higher figure twice that.

All seems fine now, the HD is quiet and running at 0% most of the time, just increasing briefly to 70% or so when I open a new app.

I hope this solves the problem for others. I was thinking I had to buy a new PC, but not now.

Interesting find because at first no one would guess 100% disk access is related to pagefile.

The obvious thing to do is install 16 GB (2 x 8 GB kit) of RAM and go back to Windows managed page file.

The page file is only going to be used a lot due to a basic lack of RAM.

I agree, not one of the first things on the list to check!

I have (4+4)G of memory and always set Virtual memory to 16G, Max and min.
Virtual memory is only used if you're out of memory (in my case, with 8G never happened) so I disabled it on C: (SSD) and set it to D: (HDD)

Thanks for the comments. I thought it worth checking, as my RAM usage is consistently fairly high (88% as I type this) so I guessed that excessive use of virtual memory could be an issue.

I am not sure that I can add extra RAM to my HP Envy 23 "all in one" system?

    Download hwinfo
It's a potable, doesn't need to be installed. Extract and run.
On the memory tab, you will find all memory specs and if there is a empty slot.

I may have spoken too soon? After a few weeks, disc usage has crept up again so it is now 100% much of the time. Mostly seems to be System or Norton accessing the disc. My memory usage is always around 60-70%.

Get rid of Norton and use Windows Defender. It's all you need.
