    [Question] Is storage sense safe?

    Hey guys

Today, I just found an option called "storage sense" in my settings that I never used before.
So I decided to use it to see what it does actually to my storage, and I clicked on "Clean now" option. However, it cleaned up about 3 GB of my space which was really surprising.

But now, I'm a bit worried about what it did to my stuff... Wanted to know which type of files this tool has removed from my storage? Are they only my downloads and temporary stuff like installation files cache?

Or can it remove some important files like my drivers or other apps data?? :/

It's perfectly safe. If this was the first time you ran it, I can almost guarantee it cleaned out a lot of old superseded Windows Updates, and temp files and useless logs. All the type of stuff that builds up over time. Don't expect to see that every time. And, no, it did not eat any of your files and data.

This is the only setting you should probably take manual control of. Handle your Downloads folder yourself.

Good tutorial here on Tenforums that also explains what Storage Sense goes after. Worth a read.

    The temporary files seems "vague".

If I go to storage in settings, and then choose "temporary files"

It lists all of the following.

Temporary files (yes same name as category), ticked by default. This is what I would want it to clean. The temp folders.
Windows update clean-up ticked by default. Deletion prevents rollback.
Temporary internet files ticked by default. Probably only Edge and IE.
    Thumbnails unticked by default.
Windows defender antivirus - ticked by default.
DirectX shader cache - ticked by default , this one is the one that bothers me, shader cache prevents stutters in games.
    Delivery optimisation files unticked.
Windows error reports created by system unticked.
    System error minidump files ticked.
Downloads unticked, we know this wont count as storage sense has separate settings for downloads.
Device driver updates ticked, these allow easy driver rollback.
    Setup log files ticked.
Recycle bin unticked, like the downloads handled by its own setting.

I do wish Microsoft clarified what is actually cleaned by the temporary files tick box in storage sense.

That I'd like to know too. C:\Windows\Temp still has folders with files in them afterwards, most likely just Windows-created ones. There are other temp file storages, such as the one under C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming but often there are files in those folders that are still in use, which is why it's not safe to clear those folders unless you're sure you know what you're doing.
