Manual Optimization of SSD vs enabling TRIM

I have a factory installed SSD and also a second 7200 rpm HDD. The factory default setting SATA mode for BIOS/UEFI storage controller is RAID instead of AHCI. To enable TRIM, it would require the RAID configuration to be changed to AHCI.

What looks strange after running fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify is that both
NTFS and ReFS file systems return '0'. But next to '0' is the word (disabled) in parenthesis.
Both file systems return the same 'mixed' results
I ran from the elevated command -> fsuil behavior set disabledeletenotify NTFS 0 to see if this would remove the word (disabled) after a new query - No luck

I emailed Dell to ask if they could explain what I'm seeing and if TRIM is enabled or not.
I think what they forgot maybe in the reply is my SSD's firmware possibly doesn't support the enablement of TRIM ??? I don't know what they're trying to communicate at times because of the language barrier. But they were good at deflecting the question though about the mixed results I'm seeing.

My guess is TRIM is not enabled. And whether optimization that Windows runs on schedule (say once a month) performs the same garbage collecting as TRIM does will remain a mystery until an intelligent explanation comes along.

You can check your Event viewer logs to see if Trim is happening or not - see Is Trim Enabled ?

The rest of that thread is about the same question that you have asked.

0 means that TRIM is on. It's confusing.

Copied from an earlier post I replied to on this site:

I created a similar situation on an Insider Preview computer with a 320GB and a 250GB HDD that had been working since joining the Technical Preview [renamed Insider Preview later]. I removed the 250GB D: drive and couldn't boot, checked the BIOS and it was set for AHCI/RAID, Win10 created the RAID setup using both drives. I reinstalled with only 1 drive connected and the AHCI was chosen then I reconnected the second drive later and all has been well since but if a reinstall becomes necessary I'll have to keep the process in mind to avoid the screw-up again.
Can't boot SSD without HDD connected

I thought that with TRIM disabled, Windows won't send instruction to the SSD.

When a file is deleted or space freed, the file system queues the TRIM request. If the queue grows to a maximum size, TRIM requests may be dropped. To limit the peak that the queue grows to maximum size, retrim is done to avoid hitting the maximum TRIM request queue size.

So when TRIM is disabled, I'm not seeing how the file system queues retrim with storage optimizer running in order to perform TRIM requests and erase files contents. Retrim is necessary because of the way TRIM is processed.

I often find Trim isn't done for up to 30 days despite being set to run automatically

I regularly run it once a week anyway to make sure.

    Hi there

With SSD's I'm not sure if any "Human" activity will improve them -- especially the newer faster things --could be wrong but my motto with this stuff is the old Engineer's one --"If it ain't broke Don't fix it".

    Cheers

If we went by that motto, we'd still be living in caves!

    Hi there
I didn't say that we couldn't IMPROVE things or invent new ones -- that's quite different but in this case there's nothing to be gained that a Human could do.

    Cheers
